Curtain raised, the clown is chanting a poem of love to the gentle sea. But the sea, always full of uncertainties, suddenly embroil Sebastian and Viola, a twin brother and sister, in the storm, with them thrown into their respective fates.
Thinking that her brother has perished at sea, Viola disguises herself as a man with the help of the clown and begins to work as the attendant for Duke Orsino. The Duke asks her to pay court to the noble girl Olivia in his stead.
Olivia, in her bereavement, gradually lets her mental guard down when she is comforted by Viola. Attracted to this young and handsome “young man”, Olivia gets up the courage to pay court to “him”.
However, Viola, who stays with the Duke every day, has fallen in love with him. She feels terribly upset since she cannot speak the truth or bare her heart at all.
Sebastian is saved by the pirate captain Antonio. He cannot wait to search for his sister Viola. So he also lands in Illyria, starting a new adventure.
A plot is just being hatched for love. Olivia’s uncle, Sir Toby, and Sir Andrew, who loves Olivia, act ludicrously in drunkenness, offending the butler Malvolio severely. Being so stern and bigoted, Malvolio hurts the maid Maria deeply.
Seeing that Malvolio, who is haughty and boastful, loves Lady Olivia, Maria, Sir Toby and the others decide to tease this lofty-minded butler with a fake love letter.
Malvolio, utterly bewitched, wears a pair of blatantly yellow stockings to show off his unique taste, only to show all sorts of ugly behaviours in front of Olivia.
This production features the NCPA Drama Ensemble including LIU Beibei, YANG Qi, SUN Lishi and DONG Wenliang. The performance will run until July 30th. Join us for a journey of love filled with hearty laughter.
