In the China-born opera, stage director TANG Juanjuan showed us how the protagonist sows gold coins in the field as appearing in a dream of Master Bayi and his wife. Such coins, personified by members of a choir, locked the greedy couple with chains. Indeed, that couple built a prison of glittering gold for themselves. And in the second half, “Moon Fairy” and “Red Willow Elf” turned up to help Effendi set a snare for the villains. Anarhan and Saibina led audiences into savouring a fabulous legend in which Effendi outsmarts Bayi.

As the sun and the moon alternately came, small houses, glistening gold mansions and a crescent formed a surreal wonderland for curious kids. Elements like mosque, shisha and round dance together created a Xinjiang-specific ambience. At last, those plebs getting gold coins distributed these little treasures to little audiences therein.

Last evening WANG Hongwei brought us his Effendi. At first, his song “To Ride My Little Donkey” made alive the smart, sunnyprotagonist far from the rapacious couple portrayed by “Let’s Ride Our Horse”. And “My Little Darling,” a funny aria, unleashed the wife’s avarice by showing off her every act of flattering Effendi. The couple sparkled truly as what they should look like. LIU Yueyang sang “Calling of the Angel” that uncovered the dream of her and even all children.

And such lively music owed its success to LAI Jiajing who took the helm. In the end, drum player Alimu Abulaiti came to interact with those singers on the stage.
