Visitors on the Snow Mountain arrives this week

On August 21^st-22^nd, the NCPA will launch opera Visitors on the Snow Mountain in concert version. Under the baton of ZHANG Guoyong, the opera will be presented by NCPA Resident Singers ZHOU Xiaolin, ZHANG Xin, WANG Chong, and WANG Hexiang, together with China NCPA Orchestra and NCPA Chorus. It will refresh the audience’s memory of the touching story in its one-and-a-half-hour duration with member of NCPA Drama Ensemble ZHAO Ling as the narrator.

In the 1960s, black-and-white film Visitors on the Snow Mountain was a smash hit. In 2014, the NCPA staged the opera version of Visitors on the Snow Mountain by composer LEI Lei, librettist YI Ming, director CHEN Xinyi and an international creative team. The opera depicted the rivalry through music, recreating the charm of the original. LEI Lei, who had also composed for the film, incorporated a distinct traditional Xinjiang art style into symphonic music, where the newly-created tunes were a gripping rendition of the love between Amir and Grandam, and the unmasking of the pseudo-Grandam.

The concert version of Visitors on the Snow Mountain breaks with the tradition of opera concerts and constructs a theatrical space in a concert hall. Through simple but effective scheduling and supplemented by set, costumes, props, lighting and other artistic means, the audience can enjoy the opera in the Concert Hall. The concert version of Visitors on the Snow Mountain will be streamed live on the NCPA Classical Music Channel and various online platforms on the evening of the 22^nd.
