On the occasion of the 14th anniversary of the NCPA, XIAN Xinghai, a dance drama co-produced by the NCPA and the Ningbo Performance and Arts Group, will be staged at the Theatre from December 16th to 22nd. On the morning of December 7th, a press conference was held at the NCPA rehearsal hall. ZHAO Tiechun, Vice President of the NCPA, LIN Hong, Secretary of the CPC Committee and Chairman of the Ningbo Performance and Arts Group, General Director XIAO Xiangrong, playwright XU Rui and other main creative and cast of the dance drama shared the highlights of and the original intentions behind its creation.

XIAN Xinghai focuses on the lesser-known second half of Chinese composer XIAN Xinghai’s life with an emphasis on the interpretation of his emotions and spirit. Through the five chapters “Prelude”, “The Sea”, “The Torrent”, “The Homeland” and “The Stars”, the dance drama presents the crucial moments of the musician’s life by reflecting on his own perspective at the end of his life. The production represents another amazing collaboration between the NCPA and Ningbo Performance and Arts Group, following the tenth run of the dance drama The Railway to Tibet. It is also the first dance drama commission co-produced and co-presented by the two organizations.
The dance drama will be presented in a modern style that meets the aesthetics of contemporary audiences, featuring an avant-garde and infectious interpretation of XIAN Xinghai’s legendary life through contemporary dance. In terms of music, classic works by the musician will be featured, blending orchestral and electronic music to show the turbulent times and highlight the inner conflicts of the character. In terms of stage design, the hero’s life will be presented with unique visual effects. Combined with a montage approach, dance, music, props and videos will be integrated to create a strong visual impact.

To faithfully reflect history, the dance drama not only brings to the stage a moving tale of XIAN Xinghai and the most important people in his life, but also adds the role of “Destiny”, the embodiment of XIAN Xinghai’s spiritual world, allowing the audience to touch the artist’s powerful spiritual world through the visualization of his inner being.
The main roles in this round of performances will be played by dancers such as WEI Shenzhou, LI Yu, WANG Jinge, HE Jiang, SUN Rui (guest) and YAN Hanyi, as well as principal dancers from the Ningbo Opera and Dance Drama Theatre, including XIA Tian, WANG Yu and WANG Zheng. The dancers from the Ningbo Opera and Dance Drama Theatre will serve as the dance crew. The cast will present a moving story of the “People’s Musician” with great passion and powerful skills in dance.
