Tonight, under the baton of principal conductor Nikolay Alexeev, St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, a world-class symphony orchestra, shone on the stage of the NCPA Concert Hall once again. This orchestra, cooperated with avant-garde pianist Daniel Kharitonov to present two classic works by Russian maestro Rachmaninoff, thereby demonstrating the vigourous power and supreme aesthetics of late Russian romantical music for Chinese music fans.
The year 2023 marks the 150
th Anniversary of the Birth of Rachmaninoff. St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra paid tribute to maestro through the medley of Piano Concerto No. 2 and
Symphony No. 2. In addition, this concert is also a part of the NCPA “Maestros Memorial” concert series.
In this concert, Daniel Kharitonov, a Russian pianist born in 1998, was the soloist of Piano Concerto No. 2. He won a bronze prize in the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in 2015. In the performance this evening, he also shed light on musical expressiveness and technique attainment beyond his age. As essential qualities of Rachmaninoff’s music, power and beauty, lyricism and restraint, magnificent style and dreamy fantasy achieved an amazing balance at the young pianist’s fingertips.
In the second half of the concert, ever-changing tones and colours rendered the emotional ups and downs under tacit cooperation of the conductor and orchestra. The impressive and moving performance also helped Chinese music fans more deeply understand the unique charm of Russian music culture, and drove new life to Rachmaninoff’s classics yet again.
The performance won standing ovation and rounds of applause from the audience. The Russian artists encored Salut d'Amour by Edward Elgar and “Chinese Dance” from The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky. Salut d'Amour was also the encore in the previous concert conducted by Yuri Temirkanov. Thanks to this unique arrangement, people felt deeply impressed by the artists’ vision for more thriving cultural exchanges between China and Russia.
