August, part of midsummer, is a good time for singing with great passion! Themed “Sound and Harmony”, this year’s August Chorus Festival will last 17 days with 13 wonderful choral concerts to be held for the audience. More than ten choirs from home and abroad will take the stage one after another to sing for the beauty of human voice,life and harmony in vocal sounds.
Music is an important part of the lives of people of all nationalities. Young men and girls dance together while singing. The songs and dances, passed down from generation to generation, are not only what amuse people of all nationalities in their spare time, but also a witness of the harmony between man and nature. They also stand for the inheritance of the history and culture of all ethnic groups. Multi-ethnic minority choral ensembles have been invited to the NCPA August Chorus Festival 2023. They will come along with music of different regions and languages to sing for the harmony between human voice and nature in a colourful choral form.

th and 5
th, the “ Opening Ceremony of the NCPA August Chorus Festival 2023” will be held with ethnic minority choirs, including the Poya Song Book Choir, Huanggang Dong Ethnic Group Chorus, Wood & Fire Orchestra, and “Over the Rainbow” Miao Duoyueliang Youth Art Ensemble, to perform the folk songs and music of multiple ethnic groups such as the Zhuang, the Dong, the Miao, the Nu, and the Lisu, including the Dong Chorus, which has been included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List, and Poya Love Songs, which have been included in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

The “Over the Rainbow” Miao Duoyueliang Youth Art Ensemble
On August 7th, a children’s chorus concert themed “Charming Echo—Ancient Times and Earth” will be held. The Naxi, Wa, Tibetan and Uyghur children’s choirs, the folk artists and the Twelve Muqam Art Troupe of Xinjiang will join hands with the Shenzhen Concert Hall “Little Golden Tree” Multiethnic Children’s Choir and Shenzhen Over the Rainbow Children’s Choir to present the songs and music flowing in their blood. The children of all nationalities will share the stage with their counterparts in the Greater Bay Area to further show the audience how multiethnic music and beautiful harmony blend together.

On August 8th, the “Love Code” Poya Love Song Chorus Concert will continue to show the audience Zhuang classic love songs from Funing—Poya love songs, and ethnic songs unique to Yunnan province.

This year’s August Chorus Festival boasts outstanding Chinese children’s choirs and college choirs. The Beijing Philharmonic Choir, a children’s choir with a history of 40 years, Inner Mongolia Youth Choir, Inner Mongolia’s first youth choir, and Central China Normal University Tiankong Choir, a leading college choir, will take the stage one after another and show the continuous development of choral art in the sound of singing.

In addition, many other excellent choirs from home and abroad will appear at the August Chorus Festival 2023. On August 11th, the Shenzhen Futian Xinghui Choir will give a choral concert themed “Basking in South Breeze”. Music originally composed by young composers in the Greater Bay Area will be mainly played in combination with southern Cantonese ballads and popular Chinese and foreign classics to fully demonstrate the characteristics of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao culture. On August 16th, the China National Traditional Orchestra Choir will sing classic folk songs from different regions and show the audience the map of Chinese folk songs; on August 17th, the B Vocal A Cappella Choir, a famous choral ensemble from Spain, will present time-honoured classical music; On August 18th and 19th, the China NCPA Chorus will present beautiful and pure “harmony” in their singing of Chinese and foreign classics; on August 20th, the China National Symphony Orchestra will perform the magnificent Yellow River Cantata at their choral concert to round off the August Chorus Festival 2023.
