NCPA Opera Das Rheingold is in rehearsal

NCPA August/20/2024
On August 28th-30th and September 1st-3rd, the NCPA’s production of Wagner’s opera Das Rheingold will have its premiere. The opera is now having rehearsals. Several journalists visited the rehearsal venue of the opera on August 19th.

Das Rheingold is the eve of Wagner’s tetralogy Der Ring Des Nibelungen. Being the shortest, it features the largest number of characters. Many characters, including the three Nymphs of the Rhine who guard the gold, the Nibelung man Alberich, who steals the gold, the golds who think differently, the giant brothers Fafner and Fasolt, etc., fight for the gold and ring over a long period of time. Their feelings of gratitude or enmity against one another, unfolds slowly in Das Rheingold and runs throughout the tetralogy.

That day, reporters watched the third scene of Das Rheingold. Alberich, portrayed by Tomas Tomasson, Mime, by Arnold Bezuyen, Loge, by Christian Franz, Wotan, by Egils Silins, and other characters appeared on stage and interpreted this classic scene so vividly. The authentic singing tune brought the philosophical story to a new height, making the audience feel as if they were watching a performance held at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus, the Holy Land for Wagner’s operas.

Wagner’s tetralogy Der Ring Des Nibelungen, honoured as Mount Everest in the opera world, has exerted far-reaching influence over the development of music. This series epitomises Wagner’s effort in pouring his relentless pursuit of Gesamtkunstwerk into the musical theatre, a comprehensive form of art. Considering the challenges of interpreting music, the number of characters, the plentiful requirements for stage presentation, etc., is undoubtedly a well-deserved epic masterwork.

Since its founding, the NCPA has successively produced more than 70 operas, including several ones by Wagner. The production of Das Rheingold, the opening part of Der Ring Des Nibelungen, implies that the NCPA feels obligated to spread world classics to Chinese audiences.

The China NCPA Orchestra will perform music under the baton of LÜ Jia, Music & Artistic Director of the NCPA. The creative team is led by Stefano Poda, an all-round director. They will take take charge of the choreography, set design, costume design, lighting design and video projection design, and collaborate with many influential Chinese or foreign singers to lead the audience into the magnificent world of gods created by Wagner.
