Initiated by the NCPA and jointly founded with the Beijing Dance Academy under the auspices of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government, the NCPA Ballet is Beijing’s first municipal ballet ensemble. The Ballet aims to become a world-class ballet ensemble with international influence. Centred on the creation and performance of contemporary and innovative ballet, the Ballet will deepen its grounding in the classical repertoire while continuing to expand contemporary body expression, creative thinking and stage presentation. Rooted in the soil of excellent traditional Chinese culture, the Ballet is committed to producing excellent ballets that carry the Chinese spirit, character and style. In doing so, it will bring strong artistic energy to the building of a culturally strong nation, to the construction of Beijing into a national cultural centre and a “capital of the performing arts”, and to the high-quality development of the city’s culture.
As a national cultural platform and a cultural landmark in Beijing, the NCPA has consistently upheld its guiding principles, “for the people, for art and for the world”, and its philosophy, summed up as “trendsetting, inheritance, innovation, openness, and inclusiveness”. The founding of the NCPA Ballet is an important step in strengthening the NCPA’s development as a professional institution, and also an effective measure to deepen the connection between high-level arts education and artistic practice. Partnering with each other, the NCPA and Beijing Dance Academy are devoted to blazing a development path that links artistic creation, talent development and stage presentation, serving audiences with excellent works and advancing Chinese ballet in innovative practice.
Based primarily at the NCPA Taihu Stage Art Centre, the NCPA Ballet will draw on the NCPA’s model of “one institution operating in three locations”, with the performing arts resources of all three venues, to support its daily training, creation and rehearsal of new works and performance production. The NCPA Ballet builds its talent base on outstanding graduates of the Affiliated Secondary School and Undergraduate Ballet Department of the Beijing Dance Academy. It also recruits brilliant dancers and ballet professionals globally so that professional education, artistic creation and stage production strengthen one another and help to build a sustainable ballet ecosystem.
The NCPA Ballet will recruit dancers worldwide. It plans to complete its formation and present its debut performance in 2026. After that, it will continue to commission and perform new and classical works and produce innovative ballets.
