SYNOPSIS
The opera Lakmé is based on Le Mariage de Loti, a drama by the French playwright Gondinet. A British officer, Gerald, falls in love with Lakmé, the daughter of Nilakantha, a priest of Brahman India. Holding a hatred for the British, Nilakantha draws his sword and stabs Gerald when the two lovers are enjoying a romantic date. Lucky enough, Gerald is saved by Lakmé and gets out of danger. They can meet each other again. Nonetheless, the war is imminent. Gerald must go with the army, whereas Lakmé commits suicide by ingesting poison.
