Synopsis
As the first original children's opera commissioned by the NCPA, The Fisherman and the Goldfish is adapted from Pushkin's fairy tale, for which Chinese renowned composer Mo Fan composes music and writes libretto. This childlike and profoundly philosophical fairy tale will be unfolded by a magical goldfish, children are impressed by endless charm of Opera Art. In order to make Pushkin's classic fairy much closer to our daily life, Mo Fan brings this original European fairy tale to a coastal fishing village in Fujian Province in China. Not only 'yugong' and 'yupo' (the Fisherman and his wife in Chinese) and other appellations have strong Chinese local flavors, but also a variety of Chinese elements are added into music creation. In the context of cordial musical elements, the creation team, led by young opera director Shen Liang, makes more use of colorful cartoon stage visual effects to unveil a colorful fairy tale kingdom for children. As multimedia designers of The Fisherman and the Goldfish, Feng Jiangzhou and Zhang Lin are active t in opera and drama productions of the NCPA. This time, golden beach, a humble fishing village and a luxurious palace will be projected under two designers' creation, thereby stimulating the infinite imagination for children.

In the children's opera The Fisherman and the Goldfish, Pushkin's classic fairy tale happens in Chinese coastal area in the Ming Dynasty. A poor fisherman goes fishing in the sea but harvests little. Out of love and compassion, the fisherman frees the only goldfish he catches, which is God of Fish in the sea. Moved by the fisherman’s simplicity and loving heart, the goldfish promises to meet his any requirements. This completely triggers the greed of the fisherman's wife. On the grounds of pregnancy, she incites the fisherman to demand a tile-roofed house from the goldfish. Unavoidably, the fisherman has recourse to the goldfish. Generous goldfish quickly satisfies this wish. But all this does not satisfy fisherwoman, and she continues to demand for more and more. Instigated by village women and drinking buddies, she even wishes to have a beautiful fantastic palace and become the queen. Endless greed eventually makes her mad. To recover the previously poor but warm life, the fisherman pathetically asks the goldfish to resume all the gifts. On the vast sea, the fisherman and his wife return to their calm life with full of warmth.
Librettist Mo Fan also adds rooster, hen and other roles into this opera. The rooster and hen are faithful pets of the fisherman's wife and often flatter with oily tongue, which exaggerate embellishment to their owner's 'daydream'.
