GAO Weichun is the National-level Grade-A Conductor and Director of the Chinese Conducting Society. In addition to symphony concerts, he has also successfully conducted hundreds of opera performances, including many world-famous operas such as the Italian operas Rigoletto and Turandot; the German and Austrian operas Le Nozze di Figaro and Die Zauberflöte; the French opera Carmen; the Russian opera Taming of the Shrew; the American musical drama The Music Man; the Chinese operas Hot Land, March of the Army and People, and Song of the Countryside, the Sino-Japanese co-produced opera Immortal Singer - Ono no Komachi and so on.

Founded in 2010, the National Orchestra of the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts is composed of outstanding teachers and students majoring in traditional Chinese instrumental music at the Department of Music. It is a unique, young and dynamic troupe engaged in Chinese national musical performance.

In recent years, the Orchestra has been committed to the inheritance and development of Chinese traditional music, making efforts to create and perform Chinese instrumental works with diverse traditional Chinese opera styles, and participating in such original Peking Opera works as Les Miserables, Nezha, Du Shiniang, The Red Detachment of Women, Mei Lanfang’s Show and other large-sized repertoires produced by the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts. The orchestra successfully held the 'Traditional Chinese Opera Concert' in Hong Kong, and also launched a series of performances in celebration of the 60^th Anniversary of the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in 2010. In 2013 and 2015, the Orchestra respectively staged the concert series 'Orchestral Music with the Charms of Traditional Chinese Opera', characterized by original traditional Chinese opera styles and national instrumental works, which was highly praised by all sectors of society. The Orchestra also cooperates with Beijing-based traditional Chinese opera troupes, and participates in a number of classic traditional Chinese opera repertoires.
