Synopsis

In a midsummer night in Athens, Duke Theseus and his fiancee are busy preparing their wedding. In the meantime, another couple are worried about their relationship. The beautiful Hermia is in love with Lysander, but her father Egeus insists that she should marry Demetrius. Egeus’ demand is supported by the Duke. Should Hermia resist she would be sentenced to death or a lifetime of chastity, according to the Athenian law. To pursue their love, Hermia and Lysander flee into the forest outside Athens.

In the forest, the King of Fairies intends to make a fool of his queen. He calls upon the shrewd spirit Puck to put a drop of love-potion on the eyelids of the sleeping queen, so that she would fall in love with the first person she sees when she wakes. Somehow, Puck gives the love potion to the wrong person, messing up the love of four young people as a result. One girl, beautiful and kind, is overjoyed for the unexpected arrival of love while the other girl, as beautiful and kind, becomes very sad. Two passionate young men decide to duel for the girl they both love, causing a succession of misunderstandings and foolish scenes. At last, the King of Fairies appears and clears up the confusion, and everyone ends up with the one they love.

Chris WhiteStage Director

Chris White

Stage Director Chris White is an associate for the Royal Shakespeare Company and a freelance director specialising in international collaborations and new writing.

He first worked for the RSC as a research assistant on a production of The Malcontent, before becoming assistant director on The Spanish Golden Age Season, touring four productions to London and Madrid. He subsequently directed Trouble and Wonder in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and has led international residencies and projects for the Education department in the U.S., India, China and the U.K. He recently directed a performance of Henry IV Part One at The Houses of Parliament and The Head that Wears a Crown: a production based on Shakespeare's Henry plays involving over 100 young people from different areas of the U.K. performed on the main stage at the RSC in Stratford-upon-Avon.

His first production as a freelance director was The Visit by Freidrich Durrenmatt at the Edinburgh Festival. This production then toured Teatro Della Contradizzione, Milan, which led to an enduring collaboration with the company. Further productions for TDC included The Suicide by Nicolai Erdman and Le Foreste di Arden, co-created and directed with the company from English Elizabethan texts including Shakespeare and Marston. In 2012 he directed the premiere of Hard Places by Indian playwright Farhad Sorabjee in the UK and then at Prithvi Theatre, Mumbai, before the production began a tour of India. The production ran alongside a project to develop short new plays by young writers in the UK and India which were performed as readings and radio dramas in both countries. In 2014, he directed the English language premiere of The Truth, by French writer Florian Zeller at La Virgule.

Chris works at Soho Theatre in London developing new plays with young writers and has directed a number of new plays in the UK including Soho Young Playwrights (Soho Theatre), The Tune is Always Better on the Outside (Mosaic Rooms), The Water When it Burns (Hampstead Theatre), The Sale (Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff), Plan D, (Tristan Bates), Cocoa (Theatre503). Other recent productions include 40 Years Young(Young Vic), I Burn, I Pine, I Perish (Belgrade, Coventry) and Scenes from 68 Years at Arcola Theatre, London.

ZHA WenyuanRevival Stage Director

ZHA Wenyuan

ZHA Wenyuan graduated from the department of directing in the Central Academy of Drama and PhD Candidate. She has served as the assistant director of the melodrama Romeo and Juliet in 2012, the assistant director of the drama MAO Yisheng in 2013, the director of drama My Poor Marat in 2013, the director of the drama Buddha Come and Go in 2014, the playwright and director of the melodrama Carrousel in 2014. She was the director of the melodrama Frühlingsglaube in 2015, the director of Shakespeare’s drama Twelfth Night in 2016, the assistant director of Shakespeare’s drama Hamlet at NCPA in 2016, the script supervisor of Shakespeare’s drama A Midsummer Night’s Dream at NCPA in 2016, the script supervisor of Shakespeare’s drama King Lear at NCPA in 2016 and the assistant director of Shakespeare’s drama Hamlet at NCPA in 2017.

ZHANG KunpengSet Designer

ZHANG Kunpeng

ZHANG Kunpeng, who is working at the NCPA, was admitted to the Central Academy of Drama as the first, majoring in the Art Design of Drama, Film and Television. He won the full college scholarship, Matsubaraoka Stage Arts scholarship of Japan, Outstanding Graduate in Beijing, the Best Set Design Award in the fourth Peking University Students Drama Festival and the Gold Award of Set Design in the China National Drama and Cultural Festival.

His works include Peking Opera You and Me, operas Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Un ballo in maschera, Visitors On the Snow Mountain, dramas The Lei Family, Wangfujing and Return on a Snowy Night and so on.

TANG MingLighting Designer

TANG Ming

TANG Ming is working at the NCPA. He took charge of lighting design in operas A Village Teacher, The Fisherman and the Goldfish and the International Ballet and Choreography Competition held by the NCPA.

He once studied in the Royal Opera House and got the certificate of advanced stage management which was granted jointly by the Royal Opera House and China Ministry of Culture in 2013.

His works include live-action performance The Border Town, Musical Dance Drama Private by the PLA General Political Department Song and Dance Ensemble, dance dramas DU Fu, Shangri-La, Dance Competition of China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and Chinese Dancing Stars; dramas Life and Songs, CHEN Jiageng and FAN Changjiang.

He also worked for a series of opening ceremonies of important events, such as the APEC China 2014 at the Water Cube. In 2014 and 2015, TANG Ming also worked for traditional opera evening party of Chinese New Year.

LI AoRevival Lighting Designer

LI Ao

From 2008 to 2012, LI Ao studied at the Central Academy of Drama, majoring in Lighting Design and received the Bachelor’s degree. In 2012, he was recommended for admission to the department of stage arts of the Central Academy of Drama, majoring in Lighting Design and received the Master’s degree in 2015. After that, he has been working in the stage technology department of NCPA.

His has participated in the design of many works, including dramas Macbeth, Poison, The Seagull, Goodbye and Juliet, Peking Opera Farewell to My Concubine; dance drama The Old Friend in the Moonlight; children’s opera Effendi, etc. He has served as the design assistant and repertoire assistant in many works, including drama King Lear, The LEI Family, Chinese New Year, Melodrama Into the Woods, Crazy for You, etc.

NING FangguoCostume Designer

NING Fangguo

NING Fangguo graduated from School of Fashion Design, Tsinghua University, with Master's Degree and medium-grade professional title of Costume Design. She is a member of the China Fashion Association and a member of China Fashion & Color Association. Currently, she works in the NCPA.

Her works have won the Market Value Award. She is costume designer of NCPA New Works Concert and TV series Special Agent Group No. 5 and Mine Warfare. She also participated in costume design for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. She boasts high-level attainment in stage costume and TV series costume. She has published many papers on industry journals and has won awards.

SUN AinaMake-up Designer

SUN Aina

SUN Aina graduated from Stage Art Major of Central Academy of Drama, and obtained Master of Arts in Specialty of Character Image Design. She is a member of the Chinese Artists Association, Professional Committee of the China Film and Television Technology Association, and serves in the China National Centre for the Performing Arts.

Her main costume design works includes: dance dramas Marco Polo, GUAN Gong, A Peking Opera Dream, Hoh Xil Dairy, Woman in that Fall, TANG Wan; dances KONG Yiji and Driven to Revolt; dramas: A Doll’s House and Unscheduled Love Affairs; operas Tosca, Der Fliegende Hollander, Lohengrin, Otello, Nabucco, Love of Tianshan; the musicals Love Life, A Beautiful New World; TV dramas The Wedding March and True Colour.

ZUO WeichenProps Designer

ZUO Weichen

As a staff of NCPA, ZUO Weichen has served as the props designer in NCPA Drama commissions like Wangfujing. He has also served as props designer in other works including musical drama Final Destination and opera Carmen by Esplanade-Theatres on the Bay.

RONG HuaSound Designer

RONG Hua

As a staff at NCPA, RONG Hua has served as the sound designer in NCPA opera commissions including Xishi, Masquerade, A Village Teacher, etc. She has also participated in NCPA drama Jane Eyre.

SHANG JunruiMovement Director

SHANG Junrui

Working at the NCPA, SHANG Junrui has participated in the producing process of a series of operas such as Turandot, Carmen, La Traviata, Die Fledermaus, Un Ballo in Maschera, Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Samson et Dalila, Norma, Le Nozze di Figaro, Aida, Eugene Onegin, Andrea Chénier, Xi Shi, Visitors on the Snow Mountain, The Ballad of Canal, dramas A Doll's House, Returning Home on a Snowy Night, Peking Opera Red Cliff, music drama The Beautiful Blue Danube - The Story of Johann Strauss' 1872 U.S. Tour, etc.

DONG Wenliang

Graduating from the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in major of Chinese Traditional Opera Performing, he has starred in many dramas, musicals and Chinese traditional operas. His representative works include The Lei Family, the Royal Architects, A Pipe Dream, Dreamer and so on.

XU Zixuanas Hippolyta/ Titania

XU Zixuan

XU Zixuan is a member of NCPA Drama Ensemble. She graduated from Beijing Film Academy, majoring in drama, film and television performance.

Her representative works of stage play include To be Continued, Dream Walker, When Smart Meets HAN Han, The Mousetrap, Murder On Dante Street, Mourning, and Homesickness. Her representative works of movies and TV dramas include Blind Message, Dash Forward, 80’s and 90’s Generation and Got a Foreign Wife. Her representative work of sitcom is Anecdotes about GUO Degang.

WANG Haoweias Lysander

WANG Haowei

As a young actor, he has performed in dramas The Lei Family, the Royal Architects, Manifesto Communist, Irkutsk Story, Geologist, Behind The Lies and The Chinese Orphan and so on. Also, he starred in film Devil and Angel and TV series The Old Framer.

LIU Beibeias Hermia

LIU Beibei

LIU Beibei is a member of NCPA Drama Ensemble. She graduated from Shandong College of Arts, majoring in drama film and television performance.

Her representative works of stage play include Be A Rich Man, Jiu’er, Thunderstorm, The Rickshaw Boy, The Peach Blossom Fan, Letter from an Unknown Woman, Desire Under the Elms, and A Woman Alone (monologue). Her representative works of films and TV dramas include Fiji Love, Tease Me and The Truth.

LU Qianwenas Hermia

LU Qianwen

LU Qianwen is a member of NCPA Drama Ensemble. She graduated from People's Liberation Army Academy of Arts, majoring in drama film and television performance.

Her representative works of stage play include DU Fu, FU Sheng, The Soul of International Communist Party, The Young Guard, Chinese Soldiers, Rotating Carmen and Belatedly love.

Her representative works of films and TV dramas include Wolf-hunting, The Village of Red Army, Revolution Places Manufacture, Land of Hero, The Songs of Sweet Water, Moods of Love, Ben Crazy Left and Visiting Work Team.

GUO Shuojie is a member of NCPA Drama Ensemble. He graduated from the Central Academy of Drama, majoring in drama film and television performance.

LIU Wenyi

LIU Wenyi is a member of NCPA Drama Ensemble. She graduated from the Central Academy of Drama, majoring in drama film and television directing.

LIU Ning

LIU Ning graduated from Beijing Film Academy, majoring in drama film and television performance.

SUN Tianqi

SUN Tianqi graduated from People's Liberation Army Academy of Art, majoring in drama film and television performance. He participated in NCPA dramas including A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hamlet, Jane Eyre; etc.

Her representative works of stage play include I Miss You, Anna Christie, Doubt, A Servant of Two Masters, The Dawns Here Are Quiet, Resting Place, Thunderstorm, Earl of Wulong Mountain, A Mid-Summer Night's Dream, Jane Eyre, and Hamlet.

Her representative works of films and TV dramas include The Moon of Gulf of Aden, Modified Tone of Love, Ultimate Mission and This Is Nothing.

WU Song

WU Song is a member of NCPA Drama Ensemble. He graduated from Beijing Film Academy, majoring in drama performance and creation. He has played and dubbed for many films and TV dramas, including dubbing for Just another Pandora’s Box, Long River 7- Saving the Earth and The legend of Chef NIC.

His representative works of stage play include Crazy for High Heels, Have No Idea Till Now II—the Year of Cat, No. 483 Merlin Street, The Death of a Playwright, GUAN Hanqing, If Memory can be Transplanted, As long as I Live Better than You, State of Siege, Tyrannical Earl, Rogue Defense, The Legend of Eight-tail Cat, Romeo and Juliet, Nine Moments, Small World, The Pillowman, etc.

YU Mengchao

YU Mengchao is a member of NCPA Drama Ensemble. He graduated from Capital Normal University, majoring in Public Affairs Administration.

His representative works of stage play include Admire Spring, Prophecy, Sir John Falstaff, The Mysterious Companions of Sun Story, Twelfth Night and Beijing People's Art Theatre drama Fisheye Lens. His representative work of play-reading is Hometown.

LI Xichangas Bottom

LI Xichang

Graduating from the Beijing Film Academy in the major of TV and Film performing, he has a great sense of humour and is good at Kuaibanr, a rhythmic comic talk or monologue to the accompaniment of bamboo clappers. Also, he has performed in dramas Stand By Me, LI Xiaohong and The Late Spring, and starred in TV series Childbearing Age (DAI Ming).

LI Lun

LI Lun graduated from Beijing Film Academy, majoring in drama film and television performance.

His representative works of stage play include Returning Home on a Snowy Night, Sunrise, Waiting for You in Heaven and Scenes from a Marriage.

LIU Xiaowen

She is a graduate of National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, studying in major of TV and Film Performing. She actively starred in lots of opera performances during her university time and her representative works include You Who Came From The Earth, The Mist and The Happy Life of ZHANG Damin. Also, she performed in a few TV productions and films such as Better and Better and Gone With The Bullets, etc.

FENG Yang

FENG Yang is a member of NCPA Drama Ensemble. He graduated from the Central Academy of Drama, majoring in drama film and television performance.

His representative works of stage play include Golden Mille Dream, Macbeth; Chinese Class, The Show Must Go On, Wild Duck and Childhood.

NCPA Drama Ensemble
NCPA Drama Ensemble was established on July 28^th, 2016 and the renowned Chinese actor PU Cunxin was invited to be the Artistic Director. After rounds of screening across the country, 22 members were selected out of a number of professional actors to become the first and the second batch of actors for the team. Having received professional trainings on lines, performance, vocal performance, and body shaping, they finally appeared on the stage of NCPA. As another resident performance troupe following the China NCPA Orchestra, the China NCPA Chorus, and the NCPA Octet, the NCPA Drama Ensemble will focus on rehearsing dramas and participating in other NCPA productions.

NCPA Drama Ensemble has taken part in several NCPA productions, including The Lei Family, Returning Home on a Snowy Night, A Midsummer Night's Dream and Jane Eyre, and the Ensemble is to present more exciting works in the future. Mr. PU Cunxin as the team’s artistic director is a celebrated actor at Beijing People's Art Theatre, and he is the Chairman of China Theatre Association as well. Moreover, Mr. PU has played important roles in many dramas, films and TV plays.
