BI Feiyu’s masterpiece makes debut on the Peking Opera stage. This drama is directed by ZHANG Manjun, the “Drama Brainwasher” and is starred by LI Yijie, winner of “Plum Blossom Award” of the Chinese Drama. LIU Xinglin, winner of Prague International Stage Art Award, presents symbolic stage design and top-grade cast will join the production of this Peking Opera.

Synopsis

In the early 1980s, XIAO Yanqiu plays the role of CHANG E in Flying to the Moon and gains huge popularity. Due to dissatisfaction with substitute’s wrong interpretation of CHANG E, XIAO Yanqiu feels that the role of CHANG E is stained and throws a cup of boiled water towards Actress B. Then she is dismissed from the post, and says goodbye to the Peking Opera stage. 20 years later, Flying to the Moon is rehearsed again. QIAO Bingzhang, president of Peking Opera Theatre, warmly invites XIAO Yanqiu to play the leading role. With unswerving wish and deep love for stage over two decades, XIAO Yanqiu is going to return to the stage with mixed feelings. She is convinced that she is the only right person to interprete CHANG E. Unexpectedly, Chunlai, a new recruit of Peking Opera Theatre, passionately tries to serve as a substitute. The past memories are recalled, and green wounds hit XIAO Yanqiu again. XIAO Yanqiu is full of hostility to Chunlai. On one hand, she disgusts Chunlai. Yet on the other hand, she appreciates and praises her talent.

On the eve of performance, XIAO Yanqiu found herself pregnant. Faced with stage desired for two decades and the leading role of CHANG E, she reluctantly takes abortion medicine, and gives up the baby she has longed for many years. Then her husband Miangua breaks with her. In the last rehearsal, XIAO Yanqiu is absent, while substitute Chunlai performs in a perfect way. XIAO Yanqiu rushes to the rehearsal scene and her performance has won wide acclaim. The grand performance scene is on the horizon. In retrospection, XIAO Yanqiu sees the gap between her interpretation of CHANG E and her ideal one. She loves the role of CHANG E so much that she cannot tolerate any imperfection... She falls into great panic and struggles with pain. Under the call from CHANG E, she desperately catches up, but goes farther away... What should she do?

This is not only an Peking Opera actress’ bitter experience and a woman’s mental history, but also the inevitable life encountered by every person. It is expected that every audience can follow the pulse of roles in the drama, feel heartbeat, gain insights into all roles’ ups and downs, and reflect on his or her own life.

ZHANG Manjun is a famous Chinese stage director and a winner of “Plum Blossom Award” of the Chinese Drama.

Her main representative works include tea-picking singing and dancing opera Field Song of Love; Hubei Flower Drum Opera Waiting for My Mr. Right in Twelve Months; Peking Opera Lamp on River; Kunqu Opera Peach Blossom; Yue Opera Meilongzhen; Pingju Opera work Red Sorghum; opera Osmanthus Flowers Blooming Everywhere in August; Huangmei Opera Marriage of Younger Qiao and so on. Her directing works are based on traditional Chinese opera, drawing inspiration from drama, emphasizing tradition and seeking innovation. Her works are lively, bold, mild and passionate, full of the flavor of the times.

YANG Rong

She has created nearly 20 large-sized works. Among them, newly-adapted historical drama Sad Qin and Cold Sword won the Second Prize of the 28^th TIAN Han Drama Award. Elegy of the Jin and Wu States and Sad Qin and Cold Sword won the Second Prize of Jiangsu Provincial Drama Literature Award. Newly-adapted historical drama Sisters with Tears, large-sized modern traditional Chinese opera works Grind Mill of Yang Family and Blue and White on Chinese Ink Painting has won the Third Prize of Jiangsu Provincial Drama Literature Award. Large-sized modern Wuxi Opera work Sansan has been selected as a project of “China National Arts Fund” and has won Wenhua Prix and Wenhua Playwright Award of the 2^nd Jiangsu Province Wenhua Award.

YIN Xiaodong

YIN Xiaodong is a Chinese first-class composer, President of China children's Art Theatre and vice President of Chinese Theater Music Society. In 1991, he graduated from Music Department, Academy of Traditional Chinese Opera. He has been the composer of Women’s Three-inch Bound Feet, ZHANG He’s Voyage to the West, Imperial Envoy LIN Zexu and many other new repertoires of Peking Opera. His works has won “Wenhua Music Creation Award” of the Chinese Art Festival, Gold Award of the Chinese Peking Opera Art Festival, etc.

When he worked in Art Department under Ministry of Culture, he took charge of the drafting of National Conservation and Support Project for Kunqu Opera Art and Protection and Support Program for Nationwide Key Peking Opera Troupes, served as performance director of national large-scale variety shows and New Year Peking Opera Gala, and participated in organizational work of a number of national-class art events, such as the Chinese Peking Opera Art Festival and Commemoration Event for the 100^th Anniversary of the Chinese Drama.

CHEN Jianzhong

CHEN Jianzhong is a professor and master’s supervisor at Music Department, Academy of Traditional Chinese Opera. The repertoires, for which he participated in the creation, won “Five Number One Project Award” of Spiritual Civilization Construction and the First Prize of the Chinese Peking Opera Art Festival, etc. He was the winner of “Wenhua Music Creation Award” of the Chinese Art Festival and has bee many times the winner of “Best Composer Award” of the Chinese Art Festival, “Golden Peacock Composer Award” and other provincial-level and ministerial-level awards.

CHEN’s Rrepresentative works include traditional Chinese opera stage dramas Women’s Three-inch Bound Feet, Qingfeng Pavilion and CHEN Tingjing; traditional Chinese opera TV series Wise Empress of Khitan Kingdom and Empress with Big Feet; Peking Opera songs Hairpin with Phoenix Pattern Pilgrimage, Embroidering Red Flag, etc.

Liu Xinglin is Professor of the Central Academy of Drama and Vice President of China Stage Art Academy.

XING XinLighting Designer

XING Xin

Xing Xin served as the lighting designer in a number of NCPA productions including operas like Xi Shi and A Village Teacher , drama s like Wangfujing and Returning Home on a Snowy Night, and the musical drama Beautiful Blue Danube - Johann Strauss´ US Tour in 1872.

Xing Xin is a first-class lighting designer of the National Theatre of China and an outstanding expert of the Ministry of Culture, enjoying the special government allowances of the State Council. His works cover an extensive range. Xing’s main works in recent years include: such dramas as Jane Eyre, Wangfujing, Returning Home on a Snowy Night and The Grand Mansion Gate; such operas as Xi Shi, A Village Teacher and Red River Valley; dance dramas like The Red Dowry and Luo Shen in the Moon Water; the Sichuan opera Stagnant Water with Ripples; the Huangmei opera Huizhou Women; the Huaguxi Drama Waiting for Him in December; the Jin opera The Red Lantern; the Peking operas Mei Lanfang and the Rickshaw Boy; the Kunqu opera A Dream in Red Mansions; the Yue opera Butterfly Lovers; the Liyuan opera Reply of a Chaste Wife; the Shaanxi opera Xijing Story; the children’s drama Journey to the West; the musical Golden Sand; and the acrobatic show Sculpting in Time. Xing has won the 9th through the 13th Wenhua Award for Stagecraft. He won the 2004-2007 and 2007-2010 National Drama Culture Award (Golden Lion Award for Drama) in a row for the Huangmei opera Huizhou Women, the children’s drama My Baby, the Ningbo opera The Pawned Wife, Peking opera Mei Lanfang, the stage play Ganzi Mountain and the Jin opera Fu Shan Goes to Beijing. Thanks to his children’s drama Sun Bird and Rabbit, Run, Xing won the Outstanding Stage Design Award at the Collective Show of Excellent Plays from National Art Theatres and Troupes, the Stage Design Award of the 5thNational Collective Show of Excellent Children’s Drama, the Outstanding Lighting Design Award of the 3rd Peking Opera Art Festival, and the Stage Design Award of the 6th, 7th and 8th China Drama Festival. The opera The Wild Plain, the Sichuan operas Face Changing and Yi Dan Da, the stage play Father, the Lü opera of Shandong province Mending the Heaven and the children’s drama My Baby have been included in the list of the National Excellent Stage Art Works Project. Xing Xin has also been given quite many national awards, including the “Award of China Art Festival”, Award of Five “One” Project, “Award of Chinese Opera Society” and “Award of China Institute of Stage Design”.

LAN LingCostume and Style Designer

LAN Ling

LAN Ling is Chinese first-class stage designer. She was former costume and style designer of Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Troupe. She is now General Manager of Hangzhou Lan Ling Art Garments Co., Ltd. She is engaged in traditional Chinese opera costume and character style design and has created hundreds of works, including Yue Opera Romance of the Western Chamber and KONG Yiji; Peking Opera Imperial Concubine of the Tang Dynasty and You and Me; Kunqu Opera BAN Zhao and Continuation of Pipa; as well as musical drama Jane Eyre.

Her designs are often selected into “Five Number One Project Award” of Spiritual Civilization Construction, “National Stage Art Masterpiece Project” and “Top Ten Quality Repertoires”. She has won “Wenhua Prix” and “Wenhua Award” of Ministry of Culture, Outstanding Design Award of the Chinese Drama Festival, Gold Award of the Chinese Peking Opera Art Festival and Institute Award of China Institute of Stage Design many times.

WU XiaopingComposer and Conductor

WU Xiaoping

WU Xiaoping is the Member of Research Institute of Literature and History under Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government, Vice President of Jiangsu Province Musicians Association and Chinese first-class composer. He has won the 10^th Wenhua Music Creation Award, the 7^th Golden Bell Award, the 10^t^h China TV Single Music Award and the 17^th National Mass Star Award, and also the Outstanding Music Design Award of the Chinese Drama Festival many times. His representative works include song MEI Lanfang; dance drama WANG Xizhi; Peking Opera XI Shi Returns to Yue State; Yue Opera LU You and TANG Wan, and orchestral work Caprice of Gaixia, etc.

WANG XiaobingOrchestrator

WANG Xiaobing

WANG Xiaobing is Chinese first-class composer and director of Drama Studio of Creation R & D Center, Jiangsu Performing Arts Group Co., Ltd. He has created many works in multiple opera types, and has won many awards of the Chinese Art Festival, “Five Number One Project Award” of Spiritual Civilization Construction, the Chinese Drama Festival, the Chinese Peking Opera Art Festival, etc. Many works are not only shortlisted in “National Stage Art Masterpiece Project” and “Outstanding Repertoires of Ministry of Culture”, but also are selected into “China National Arts Fund”.

His main musical works include orchestral work Dream of Yi Ethnic Group; erhu and orchestral work Prosperity Brought by Dragon and Phoenix and Caprice of North Jiangsu; banhu and orchestral work Lofty Spirit Like Rainbow Spanning the Sky; chamber music work A Glimpse of Fog and Rain; guzheng and electronic music work Girl’s Dream; songs Mochou Listening to the Rain, Recalling the Operatic Circle, etc.

CHEN Xiaodong is Chinese first-class Audio Director, Member of Chinese Musicians Association, Director of Jiangsu Province Musicians Association, Visiting Professor of Nanjing Normal University and music producer. CHEN Xiaodong is producer, planner and recorder of many musical works which have won various national-class art awards.

LI Yijie

Formerly known as LI Jie, LI Yijie is Chinese first-class performer. She follows MEI School and has played the role of Qingyi (the demure middle-aged or young female character type in Chinese operas). She won “Wenhua Performance Award” (Government Award for the Chinese Culture and Arts), “Plum Blossom Award” of the Chinese Drama, “Magnolia Award for Protagonist”, the First Prize for National Outstanding Young Peking Opera Performers’ Collective Performance and “Young Artist Award” of the 2^nd Local Traditional Chinese Opera Festival in Paris. She has been conferred with honorable title of “Star of the Chinese Peking Opera” by China Jingju (Peking Opera) Arts Fund.

LIU Jianjieas QIAO Bingzhang

LIU Jianjie

LIU Jianjie is Chinese first-class performer. He follows YANG School and plays the role of Laosheng (old gentleman in Chinese operas). He is now Vice President of Shandong Peking Opera Theatre and he features loud and clear voice and prudent performance. He has starred in such repertoires as Panic in the Han Palace, Yang Silang Visits His Mother and Strong-willed Confucian. In 2013, he played the leading role of Rui Fu Xiang (original work of Shandong Peking Opera Theatre), which won “Wenhua Prix” of the 10^th Chinese Art Festival (No.1 in Peking Opera and Kunqu Opera). He won the 26^th “Plum Blossom Award” of the Chinese Drama, “Performance Award” of the 3^r^d Chinese Peking Opera Art Festival, etc.

CHEN Junjieas Miangua

CHEN Junjie

CHEN Junjie is Chinese first-class performer. As a famous actor engaged in Hualian (male character with a painted face in Chinese operas), he follows Qiu School. He is the third-generation descendant of Qiu School. He graduated from the First Graduate Class for Outstanding Young Performers of the Chinese Peking Opera. He is Visiting Professor of Academy of Traditional Chinese Opera, the CPC member and Member of Beijing Municipal Committee of China Democratic League (Cultural Circle). He is reputed as “Artist for the Common People”. He participated in the 1997-98’ Spring Festival Gala and hundreds of TV evening parties across China. And he is currently not only one of the top nine starring actors and actresses of Beijing Peking Opera Theater, but also main actor of Mei Lanfang Beijing Opera Troupe.

FANG Murongas Chunlai

FANG Murong

FANG Murong is outstanding young performer of Shanghai Peking Opera Theater. She follows MEI School and plays the role of Qingyi (the demure middle-aged or young female character type in Chinese operas). She graduated from Undergraduate Peking Opera Performance Class of College of Chinese Opera, Shanghai Theatre Academy. She often plays roles in Peking Opera Return of the Phoenix, SU San Escorted under Guard and The Drunk Beauty and Kunqu Opera Sweet Dream in the Garden, A Tale of Jade Hairpin, etc. She won the First Prize of “Chaoshan Galaxy Award” for Literature and Art, Screen Award of “the 2^nd CCTV National Traditional Chinese Opera Academy Students TV Contest”, etc.

WANG Dongas XIA Ming

WANG Dong

Born in 1987, WANG Dong studied in Jiangsu Provincial Traditional Chinese Opera School in 1998-2003. When he graduated in 2003, he was assigned to Jiangsu Provincial Peking Opera Theatre. He has worked in Jiangsu Provincial Peking Opera Theatre since then. He has played roles in Peking opera works Anecdotes of Concubine YANG Yuhuan and YUE Fei’s Loyalty to Serve the Country; drama Nanjing Zhongshan Wharf, etc. He played the role of “GAO Ersen” in Waving Red Scarf which won “Five Number One Project Award” of Spiritual Civilization Construction and “Wenhua Award for Outstanding Repertoires”. He was body movement director and participated in the drama New Dragon Pass. He is a member of Jiangsu Provincial Peking Opera Theatre Delegation to visit Germany, Malta, the Netherlands, Colombia, Japan, South Korea and other countries and regions.
