Hebei Symphony Orchestra
Established in 1983, the Hebei Symphony Orchestra is a provincial state-run professional symphony orchestra. The organization has a staff size of 140, with 119 permanent staff members and 40 employed staff members, 48 of whom hold senior certificate and 49 hold intermediate certificate. The orchestra now has two performance entities, the Symphony Orchestra and the Vocal Ensemble. Currently, SHANG Mingkai is the General Secretary of the Party Branch of the orchestra; GAO Junling and TUO Peng are Vice-Presidents of the orchestra; famous conductor ZHANG Guoyong is the orchestra’s Artistic Advisor and Chief Guest Conductor; and young conductor TUO Peng is its permanent conductor.
Since its inception, the Hebei Symphony Orchestra has adhered to the principle of “serving the people and socialism” and the artistic production policy of “making the past serving the present and adapting the foreign things to Chinese needs”. It has strived to build a professional symphony orchestra with its roots in Hebei and eyes on the world. The orchestra has invited more than 70 famous conductors, performers and singers from China and abroad to collaborate with the orchestra, including LI Delun, HAN Zhongjie, XU Xin, HUANG Xiaotong, ZHENG Xiaoying, BIAN Zushan, CHEN Xieyang, TAN Lihua, WU Lingfen, YU Feng, SHAO En, ZHANG Yi, LI Xincao, CAI Jindong, XIA Xiaotang, David Barker (US), LIU Shikun, LANG Lang, YUAN Jie, XUE Suli, TAN Xiaotang, XUE Yingjia, LI Guangxi, LEI Jia, DAI Yuqiang, WEI Song, MO Hualun, YAO Hong, and WU Bixia. The orchestra has participated in the “International Music Festival” in France with great success; its vocal ensemble has won many prizes in international and domestic vocal competitions.
In recent years, the orchestra has been commissioned to compose a number of symphonic works, including Heroic Hebei, Baipo Symphony: the PRC Rose from Here, Beloved Motherland, Folk Songs of Hebei, Hebei Epic, The Beautiful Hebei, Ode to Malan, The Great Wall, The PRC Rose from Here: Xibaipo Suite, Symphonic Suite: The Hebei Full of Hope. Among them, Heroic Hebei was selected by the Ministry of Culture as one of the sixteen outstanding pieces performed in Beijing to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. The concert Baipo Symphony: the PRC Rose from Here was selected by the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the CPC and the Ministry of Culture as the opening performance of “Report to the Motherland”, the large-scale performance series to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the PRC. The large-scale vocal suite Xibaipo Suite: The Ever-Changing World, performed in cooperation with the Comrade-in-arms Art Troupe of the Beijing Military Region, was selected by the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the CPC and the Ministry of Culture as the opening performance of the “Festival of Excellent Productions to Celebrate the 65th Anniversary of the Founding of the PRC”. The symphonic poem The Great Wall was selected by the Ministry of Culture as a project funded by the China National Arts Fund in 2016. The symphonic suite The Hebei Full of Hope served as a tribute performance of the CPC Hebei Provincial Committee and Hebei Provincial Government for the 70th anniversary of the founding of the PRC.
In recent years, the Hebei Symphony Orchestra has been invited to participate in the CCTV-MTV Music Festival and the first and third “China Orchestral Festival”; it has successfully hosted the Hebei Performance Week of the second China Symphony Music Season in North China; it has performed twice at the Beijing Modern Music Festival; it has served for the accompaniment throughout the final stage of the 15th CCTV Young Singers Grand Prix; and it has won the gold medal in the third “Yellow River Cantata” Invitation Competition by the Ministry of Culture. In 2018, the orchestra participated in the live broadcast of the Tai’an sub-stage of the CCTV Spring Festival Gala; in 2019, it was invited to participate in the “Symphony Performance of 1000 People in Tiananmen Square to Celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the PRC”; and in 2020, it hosted the “2020 Chongli Forest Concert” to promote the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
