GONG Linna is a singer and the creator of New Chinese Art Music. She is an artist with a pioneering artistic mind and innovative spirit. She has studied the different vocal techniques of Chinese opera and folk songs, and has skillfully integrated them into the performance of her new art songs. Over the past decade, she has sung a large number of classical Chinese poems, transforming her profound understanding of ancient Chinese poetry into a new musical style. Her masterpieces include In the Still of the Night, The Mountain Spirit and Searching High and Low. She has published books including Learn to Sing with GONG Linna, Free Woman and Follow Your Own Path.
Robert Zollitsch, born in Munich, Germany in 1966, is a composer of new Chinese art music. In 1993, he won a German national scholarship and started studying Chinese music at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Over the past two decades, he has been integrating the influence of Chinese and European cultures on him into his music creation, forming a unique musical style. His works, which are not limited to any established musical style, are based on the essence of Chinese culture and the innovation of Chinese art music. In 2014, he composed Chimes in Harmony for the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and Hubei Chime Bells Orchestra; in 2015, he composed a large-scale oratorio, Chinese Requiem, for QU Yuan’s Chu poetry Nine Odes, and also composed about 100 pieces for the flute, suona and pipa, including concertos, Chinese folk chamber works, new Chinese art songs and songs filled with ancient poetry. In 2016, he served as the artistic director of the opening ceremony of the 13th China International Chorus Festival (CICF). In 2017, he began to compose GONG Linna’s Rhyme of the Twenty-four Solar Terms. In July 2018, the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra successfully gave a concert of his works. His representative works composed in recent years include Bridge, Four Seasons in South China, Song of the Yi River, Travelling Westward, Strolling in the Wilderness, etc. Not only do these works show people the charm of the sheng, erhu, suona, bamboo flute and other traditional Chinese musical instruments, but also they demonstrate his inheritance and innovation of Chinese musical tradition.
FAN Xuehui, who holds a master’s degree in choral conducting, is Deputy Head, Artistic Director of Angels Chorus.
In 1993, she was admitted to the DoReMi Children’s Chorus with distinction. From 1994 to 2008, she served as the head and assistant conductor of the Chorus. She used to study choral singing with ZHANG Yida, a composer at the Air Force Political Department, former Vice Chairman of the Children’s Chorus Council, China Chorus Association, and a distinguished professor at the Department of Choral Conducting, China Conservatory of Music.
In 1997, she was admitted to the Xuanwu District Vocational Art School, Beijing with the highest mark.
In 2001, she was admitted to the Music College of Capital Normal University with honours, majoring in choral conducting with young conductor LI Moran as her tutor.
In 2014, she was admitted to the Conducting Department of China Conservatory of Music and studied for a master’s degree in choral conducting under the tutelage of WU Lingfen, Chairman of the Arts Council of China Chorus Association, a professor at the Conducting Department of China Conservatory of Music, and a famous Chinese music educator.
Being good at teaching in a flexible way in a relaxed, pleasant atmosphere, she can integrate the world’s three major music teaching methods into chorus rehearsal. She is therefore much-loved by the choristers. Especially, she has a wealth of experience in children’s chorus training. She is adept in integrating emotions into singing, upholds the idea of “enlightening the mind with chorus and going forward with partners”, and devotes herself to nourishing the students’ hearts with choral art.
With abundant experience in choral singing, she has participated in lots of chorus competitions and joint performances organised by governmental sectors, achieving excellent results.
She deals with different government organs, ministries and commissions all the year round, including the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Finance, the National Development and Reform Commission, the army, banks, SINOPEC, PetroChina, newspapers, Post Office, Civil Aviation, and colleges. She has attended chorus competitions held by the above institutions, achieving outstanding results. She has won the title of “Best Conductor”, too.
