WANG Peiyu, a famous Peking Opera artist, is an elderly male role player with Yu’s performing style. She is a graduate of China’s Third Post-graduate Courses for Outstanding Young Actors of the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts. Now she is a national first-class actress of the Shanghai Jingju Theatre Company, deputy to the 15^th Shanghai Municipal People’s Congress, Vice Chairman of the 12^th Shanghai Federation of Youth, and member of the 15^th Executive Committee of the Shanghai Women’s Federation.

WANG Peiyu used to study under famous Peking Opera artists including WANG Siji, ZHU Bingqian, TAN Yuanshou, LI Xixiang, and ZHANG Xuejin. With her plain, meaningful voice and handsome, gentle appearance in costume and makeup, WANG Peiyu is a grandmaster in both singing, speaking, acting and acrobatics. Becoming famous at a young age, she is the backbone of Peking Opera today. WANG Peiyu has received prizes including the Best Performance Award in the National TV Competition for Young Peking Opera Actors, the Plum Blossom Prize and the Magnolia Award for Best Actress; she has won honourary titles such as the 2013 Shanghai Leading Talents, the China’s Top Ten Cultural Celebrities of 2015, the Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritor of Shanghai, the Outstanding Expert of the Ministry of Culture, the Shanghai March 8^th Woman Red-Banner Pacesetter of 2018, the 2018 Education Newsmaker of the Year of Shanghai, the National Woman Red-Banner Pacesetter of 2019, and the Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritor of the Year in 2019.

WANG Peiyu insists on inheriting the traditional operas. She has arranged and rearranged more than 20 lost operas in her “YU-Style” Traditional Peking Opera Performance and established some performing arts brands including WANG Peiyu Peking Opera Qinyinhui（a unique performance mode featuring the combination of Peking opera and live interaction), making outstanding contributions to the inheritance and development of Peking Opera. On the basis of professionalization, she keeps trying to spread and popularise Peking Opera through various platforms and channels in many ways popular with contemporary young people. For instance, she has given a lecture on guidance for Peking Opera appreciation - WANG Peiyu’s Peking Opera Class, and given about 500 lectures in major Chinese universities and cultural institutions. In addition, she has launched 100 lessons entitled Peking Opera is a great fun on Himalaya FM, filling the gap of lacking pay-per-listen traditional operas. These lessons have been listened to for more than four million times. She has appeared on highly popular entertainment programmes including Who Can Who Up, Readers, King Cross, Day Day Up, First Class Begins, Everlasting Classics, The Round Table, Roast, National Treasure, Singer, Bravo Youngsters, Flowing Singing Sound, Going Crazy for Songs, Opera-Universe, Creating My Opera Masterpiece, etc.

Since 2018, the Yuyin Club, founded by WANG Peiyu, has successively launched a Peking Opera education programme and set up a high-quality team of young Peking Opera teachers, who have taught more than 5,000 students in over 40 primary and secondary schools across ten districts of Shanghai. These teachers have also independently developed and published the first set of Peking Opera general textbooks for teenagers in China. More and more people who did not know they would like Peking Opera have entered the theatre and begun to explore the wonderful world of Peking Opera. Since 2021, WANG Peiyu and her Yuyin Club have spared no effort to launch the Peking Opera Class programme for children aged 5-10. The programme is designed to inherit the traditional professional ethics and create a systematic, comprehensive, diversified and delightful Peking Opera classroom in accordance with the modern education system to cultivate future successors for the Peking Opera art.
