Coproduced by Shanghai Opera House and Tencent Video, the Neo-classical Chinese-style opera A Dream of Splendor reimagines the popular TV drama of the same title for the stage. Drawing inspiration from the original series and the Yuan Dynasty poetic drama The Rescue of a Courtesan, it follows the journey of three women ZHAO Pan’er, SONG Yinzhang and SUN Sanniang, as they support and uplift each other, growing in self-love, strength, and independence. Through their emotional, professional, and intellectual awakenings, the opera highlights “female empowerment” while resonating deeply with contemporary audience. While preserving the essence of opera, it infuses traditional Chinese culture into its production. Inspired by the musicality contained in Song poetry and lyric verses of Yuan Dynasty, the opera blends symphonic arrangements with classical Chinese music elements. Visually, it captures the bursting life and elegant aesthetics of the Song Dynasty, presenting its rich culture, both popular and refined, on the stage with a minimalist beauty.
