The story took place in Paris in the early 20th century. In celebration of his king’s birthday, Zeta, Ambassador of Pontevedro in Paris, holds a dance party to entertain the diplomatic envoys from various countries. The most important guest is a young widow, Hanna. Young and beautiful, Hanna marries a wealthy old banker in Pontevedro, but her husband passes away soon after their marriage, leaving her with a huge legacy. After inheriting the legacy, Hanna comes to Paris, where she becomes a target for proposals from single men of various nationalities, in particular Berlioees and Viscount Cascata. In order to prevent the huge fortune from being taken away by a foreign man, Zeta orders Danilo, a young and handsome embassy official, to pursue Hanna. But Danilo gives a flat refusal, because he already knows that Hanna is his old flame, whom he never forgets. They break up with each other because Danilo’s aristocratic family members look down upon Hanna, a girl of humble birth. Hanna is forced to marry an old banker, so that Danilo, feeling very sad, runs far away from home and comes to Paris. Having difficulty forgetting this romantic experience, Danilo immerses himself in wine every day. Now he expects to have a reunion with Hanna, but he refuses to approach her for the sake of wealth. Hanna is very reluctant to marry the old banker, because she cannot get Danilo out of her heart. Still loving each other, both of them have an air of haughty aloofness, unwilling to bow down to each other, in view of their past grudges. So, they depart unhappily whenever meeting. Later, Danilo mistakenly thinks that Hanna is going to marry a young Frenchman, Camille. After a series of romantic and diplomatic conflicts, Hanna confirms Danilo’s feelings for her. She clears up his misunderstanding about her marriage, and demonstrates her love for him. Hence, they cast aside past grudges and get married happily. Meanwhile, Ambassador Zeta accomplishes his mission, to the satisfaction of all.
