Set in Peking in 1939, a year when the Chinese People were still in their War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the drama Beijing Swift tells a story about a survey team, led by architect ZHANG Di, secretly beginning to survey and map ancient buildings along the Central Axis of Peking in the enemy-occupied area. They try to safeguard the Chinese civilisation and protect the national cultural heritage.
A crisis breaks out when the drum-tower is just under nocturnal survey. Seeing the ancient building damaged, ZHANG Di remains convinced that the architectural drawing can help to make the building reborn. After failing in the nocturnal survey, he cannot but feign allegiance to the traitor LI Qianmo. With the support of Mr. SITU and the aid of QIN Xiao, an underground Party member, he sets up a survey team. Under his leadership, the team members measure the Forbidden City inch by inch from the Hall of Literary Glory to the Hall of Supreme Harmony. The young architect gradually achieves growth in danger.
Surveying and mapping are not merely a great technical challenge, but also a test of willpower under tough conditions. In the daily tedious work, they unravel the mystery of Treatise on Architectural Methods, enabling themselves to upgrade mechanical recording to a more profound insight into the Chinese ancient architecture. Their insistence on staying in the enemy-occupied area indicates that there is something in common between individual destiny and national calamity. JIN Yuyan is of noble birth, but he pursues progress. LI Jinyang, born with a fear of heights, ultimately overcomes his fear. DENG Yusheng, whose family is already ruined, holds on to the last. Eunuch PANG turns himself from a champion of the dynasty into a martyr for civilisation. Mr. SITU and his fellows devise a stratagem by which they mix the spurious with the genuine to protect the blueprint, and succeed.
After more than four years of hard work, the moment of victory finally arrives. The blueprint is already transferred to a safe place in silence, becoming a seed for the reconstruction of civilisation. On these turbulent days, what they do is not merely salvage the Central Axis of Peking, but also save the national spirit. Every stroke of the pen adds to the resistance against the invaders, while perseverance in each step helps to perpetuate the civilisation.
