WANG Jiannan is a director at the National Theatre of China, graduating from the Directing Department of the Central Academy of Drama in 2004. He has directed numerous stage dramas, earning multiple national, ministerial, and provincial awards. He has frequently served as theatre director for major national events. He is a member of the China Theatre Association, commissary of the Beijing Municipal Political Consultative Conference, and Deputy President of the Beijing Friendship Association for Non-Party Intellectuals.

He has served as the theatre director for major CCTV programmes such as Readers, Victory and Peace - A Large-scale Evening Gala Celebrating the 70^th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and World Anti-Fascist Victory and Concert Celebrating the 95^th Anniversary of the Founding of the CPC. He was also the deputy chief director of Love for Haojiang River & China Heart, a gala for the 20^th Anniversary of Macau’s Return to China.

ZHANG Huaxiang is a professor at the Central Academy of Drama and a stage designer. He holds combined Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in stage design from the Department of Stage Design, Central Academy of Drama, where he studied under Prof. XU Xiang. Many works featuring his design have been staged at the China Art Festival, China Theatre Festival and other top national drama festivals, winning many national, ministerial and provincial prizes including the National “Five-One Project” Award Spiritual Civilisation Construction and Wenhua Award. He himself has thus received individual awards. ZHANG Huaxiang has cooperated with theatres and social organisations including the NCPA, National Theatre of China, National Peking Opera Company, Beijing Children’s Art Theatre, Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre, Shanxi Drama Theatre, Yunnan Drama Theatre, Sichuan People’s Art Theatre, Guizhou Drama Theatre, Wuhan Theatre of People’s Art, Hangzhou Modern Drama Troupe, Dalian Drama Theatre, Qingdao Drama Theatre, Chengdu Art Theatre, Xi’an Shaanxi Opera Yisu Society, Guizhou Huadeng Opera Theater, Guizhou Opera Company, Heilongjiang Ping Opera Theatre, Ningbo Yong Opera Troupe, Associacao de Arte Dramatica de Macau, Black Swan State Theatre Company, Perth, etc.

ZHANG Huaxiang has published more than ten theses in core journals, and published a monograph, XUE Dianjie: A Chinese Stage Art Master’s Artistic Life.

LI Ao is a lighting designer at the NCPA and a Class II set designer, holding both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in lighting design from the Central Academy of Drama. He is a member of the China Theatre Association, Beijing Theatre Association and China Institute of Stage Design. His designs have received numerous provincial and ministerial awards, with many productions invited to prominent festivals and stage design exhibitions in China and abroad.

His representative works include dramas Macbeth, Yuzuru, Poison, Roméo et Juliette, The Seagull, Goodbye, Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Ya’akobi & Leidental, The Birds, The Peach Blossom Fan, Don’t Look Back, The Shawshank Redemption and Il Servitore di Due Padroni, children’s dramas The Frozen Time Machine, Effendi, Grandpa Pagoda Tree, Waka Waka Planet of Candies, The Rosefinch, etc., operas and musicals Ordinary World, WANG Guangqi, Mei, Heart at Ease Here, Light and Shadow, etc., dance dramas Far Away, Right Here, There Comes an Old Friend Under the Moon, Song of Love, Dawn Soon to Break in the East, Blue and White, etc., Peking opera Farewell to My concubine, Bai drama Patriotism of Bai People, festive lantern opera Colourful World, etc.

LI Ao has served as an executive lighting designer for dance dramas The Railway to Tibet, Taming of the Princess and XIAN Xinghai, dramas King Lear, The LEI Family, the Royal Architects, Home, New Year Celebration, The Crossroad, Hamlet, etc., musicals Into The Woods, Crazy For You, etc., and operas Jinsha River, Effendi & His Double, etc.

WANG Yukuan is a costume designer at the China National Opera House, holding a Master’s Degree from the Beijing Dance Academy, and member of the China Institute of Stage Design.

WANG Yukuan held a costume design exhibition at the NCPA. He attended the CISD Contemporary Young Scenographer Nomination Exhibition 2018 and the INNOVATIVE COSTUME of the 21^st CENTURY International Designer Exhibition Russia 2019 on invitation. He has made designs for large-scale events including the opening and closing ceremonies of the Guangzhou Asian Games, The Road To Revival, a large-scale musical dance epic staged in order to celebrate the 60^th anniversary of the founding of the PRC, Our Flag, held to mark the 90^th anniversary of the founding of the CPC, A Great Journey, held to mark the 100^th anniversary of the founding of the CPC, etc. He was chief costume designer for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Third Asian Beach Games.

WANG Yukuan won the Gold Award for Best Creative Product and Excellence Award for Costume Design in the First “Yunnan Provincial” Golden Tripod Cup National Competition for Young Designers. His design for the opera Yimeng Mountains won the 17^th Wenhua Award and the 15^th “Five-One Project” Award. His design for the dance drama Mulan won the 11^th China “Lotus Award” for Drama Dance and the 14^th “Five-One Project” Award. His design for the opera Tannhäuser won the only Excellent Costume Design at the First China Opera Festival. His design for the opera Die Walküre won the Excellent Costume Design Award by the Ministry of Culture in 2013. His design for the opera Hongbang Tailor won the “Five-One Project” Award.

His representative works include operas The Red Detachment of Women, Erquan Spring, Border Town, Yimeng Mountains and Siegfried, musicals Red Lantern, Light Chaser, Judgement Day and Beijing Story, Dance dramas Mulan, Landscape of Guilin, Golden Peacock and Cornfield, and dramas To My Wife and Returning Home on a Snowy Night.

TIAN Dan is a professor, postgraduate tutor, and doctoral supervisor at the Department of Stage Design, Central Academy of Drama. She also serves as Secretary of the General Party Branch of the Department of Stage Design, Central Academy of Drama, Vice Chair of the Costume Society of the China Film Art Direction Academy (CFADA), and Chair of the Makeup & Hair Style Design Teaching Union for Colleges and Universities in Beijing.

TIAN Dan was the makeup designer for the NCPA classic comedy Il Servitore di Due Padroni in 2024; makeup designer for the NCPA national opera commission Minning Town in 2022; makeup designer for the NCPA opera commission Jinsha River in 2017; executive makeup designer for the NCPA opera commission Tannhäuser in 2016; makeup designer for the NCPA opera commission Visitors on the Snow Mountain in 2014; executive makeup designer for the NCPA opera Norma in 2014; executive makeup designer for the NCPA opera Les Contes d’Hoffmann in 2013. In 2023, she designed makeup for the commission drama Children of Trouble Time, a China National Arts Fund production, as well as for The Butterfly Lovers, a drama awarded the Best Drama Prize at the 2023 International Theatre Festival for College Students by the World Theatre Education Alliance. She also worked on costumes and makeup design for The Taming of the Shrew 2019, which won the Best Drama Award at the 2019 International Theatre Festival for College Students, makeup design for The White Snake at the 2019 International Forum on Theatre Education & Research in Asia, and makeup design for the China Ethnic Song & Dance Ensemble dance drama commission The Heavenly Road in 2018. Her international credits include costume and makeup design for Il Servitore di Due Padroni at the 2018 “BRICS” Theatre Festival in Russia, The Tragedy of Dr. Faustus at the Tenth Theatre Olympics Arts Festival in Hungary in 2023, and numerous collaborations with foreign directors, such as La Cerisaie and The Seagull (both 2014, Russia), Into The Woods (2013, USA), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2013, Sweden), Crazy For You (2012, USA), Fame (2009, USA), and Lycko - Pers resa (2008, Sweden) . TIAN also designed makeup for productions including the China Ethnic Song & Dance Ensemble large-scale national song and dance drama commission The Veteran in 2023, Songs of QU Yuan, a drama staged by the graduates of the Acting Department of the Central Academy of Drama in 2024, The Piano in a Factory, a drama staged by the graduates of the Department of Musical Theatre of the Central Academy of Drama in 2024, Hamlet, a drama staged by the graduates of the Drama, Visual and Performing Arts Class at the Acting Department of the Central Academy of Drama in 2023, Mozart in 2021 (costume design), Macbeth in 2015, The Past Stories of the Countryside, a solo performance staged at the Theatre Olympics, in 2014, Fly the Peacocks in 2011, Dobrý voják Svejk in World War II in 2011, the musical Le Tartuffe ou l’Hypocrite in 2007, and was chief makeup designer for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010.

CHENG Jiajia is a composer at the National Theatre of China and member of the Chinese Theatre Association, holding a Master’s Degree in Composition from the China Conservatory of Music. As a composer and music director, she has participated in the production and rehearsals of more than 40 dramas, operas and musicals.

Her representative works include dramas Man and Wilderness, Jane Eyre, The Count of Monte Cristo, Soul of Red Rock, The Homecoming, A Lifelong Journey and War Horse (Chinese), and musicals Butterflies, The Piano in a Factory, Into The Woods (Chinese), BBALLAE (Chinese), etc.

RONG Hua is a sub-senior sound designer at the NCPA, holding a bachelor’s degree in recording engineering from the Communication University of China and master’s degree in theatre design & stage technology from the Beijing University of Technology.

 

RONG Hua has served as sound designer, sound effects designer and producer for a number of stage productions. Her representative works including the NCPA opera commissions Xishi, Gianni Schicchi and Un Ballo in Maschera, children’s operas Snow White, Effendi and Effendi & His Double, dramas Jane Eyre, A Doll’s House, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Crossroads and Il Servitore di Due Padroni, and dance drama The Railway to Tibet.

 

Some productions featuring her designs have been awarded the title of Excellent Stage Drama for Children and/or received support from the China National Arts Fund. RONG Hua attended the Beijing International Ballet and Choreography Competition and Second China Dance “Lotus Award” Lifetime Achievement Award Ceremony.
