Founded in 1993, the Guangzhou Ballet Theatre is one of the first five ballet ensembles to be set up in China, well-known on the world stage for its diverse artistic styles, consummate performing skills and superb performance quality. Since its founding, the Theatre has successively created a series of high-quality works that are ideologically sound, artistically profound and enjoyable, injecting new vitality into the creative transformation and innovative development of Chinese ballet.

The Theatre now has over 20 grand ballets in its repertoire. It has won more than 110 international and national awards, as well as more than 100 provincial and municipal prizes. Its ballet commission Returning Home on a Snowy Night garnered the 13^th “Wenhua Award” and all individual Wenhua awards. Awe-inspiring Iron Army received financial support for large-scale stage creation from the China National Arts Fund in 2019, and was selected for the final evaluation of ballets at the 12^th China Dance “Lotus Awards”. The Flag won the 13^th China Dance “Lotus Awards” for Ballet, Excellent Award at the 13^th National Dance Showcase, and Excellence Award at the “Five-One Project” Awards for the 12^th Session of Spiritual Civilisation Construction in Guangdong Province. It also received financial support for communication, exchange and promotion from the China National Arts Fund in 2023, was selected as a key artistic masterpiece by Guangzhou City, and was staged at the “Hundred Years, Hundred Works” Stage Art Masterpieces Exhibition. The Legend of the White Snake garnered the Excellence Award at the “Five-One Project” Awards for the 13^th Session of Spiritual Civilisation Construction in Guangdong Province, Excellence Award at the 18^th China Theatre Festival, 11^th Guangdong LU Xun Literature and Art Prize (for art), and First Prize for Large-Scale Stage Art Work at the 15^th Guangdong Arts Festival. It also received financial support for communication, exchange and promotion from the China National Arts Fund (General Project) in 2025, support for large-scale stage art creation from the China National Arts Fund in 2023, support as one of the sixth batch of key artistic works from Guangzhou City, and early-stage support for “excellent original production” from the Guangzhou Municipal Special Fund for Culture and Tourism Industry Development. Home received financial support for large-scale stage art creation from the China National Arts Fund (General Project) in 2025.

As a cultural ambassador, the Theatre was invited to hold the “China-U.S. Dance Culture Week” at the world’s top art venue - Lincoln Center. Besides, it has given performances in many countries and regions across Europe, the Americas, Asia and Oceania, winning wide acclaim from domestic and foreign politicians, media and audiences, making a positive contribution to Sino-foreign cultural exchange.

Over the years, the Theatre has actively tried to achieve connotative development‌ for professional improvement and talent cultivation. By broadening the space for talent growth and recruiting outstanding talents for team expansion, the Theatre has set up a high-caliber personnel team led by Art Director ZOU Gang, with art experts as the core and young and middle-aged artists as reserve forces.
