A woman’s 40-year-long journey of love is captured by a pen of exquisite subtlety and luminous brilliance, unfolding as a poignant tale full of ups and downs. The stage drama Everlasting Regret, adapted from WANG Anyi’s novel of the same title, will be presented in Shanghai dialect.
In the 1940s, WANG Qiyao, a middle schoolgirl, is crowned “Miss Shanghai” - a title that sets her on a life of mishaps. She becomes the “caged bird” of a high‑ranking official, transformed from a girl into a woman. Before long, the official dies in an accident and Shanghai gets liberated, with WANG Qiyao reduced to an ordinary citizen, adrift like duckweed. On the surface, her days flow as placidly as water, yet inwardly, the storm of emotion never abates. Her romantic entanglements with several men - fraught with fortuities and plaintive resentments - seem, in retrospect, predestined. Facing the profound changes of the time, she clings weakly to her past lifestyle and sensibilities, gradually sinking into all this…
In the 1980s, WANG Qiyao, already in her fifties, gets caught in a fate from which there is no escape. She falls in perverted love with a nostalgic young man named “Old Clerk”. Her twilight years flickering with a dim glow, her heart remains burning with passion. However, she meets a tragic end, with a deep regret…
