August 22^nd - Shanghai Yue Opera House Empresses in the Palace I (19:30)

In ancient times, three artless and innocent maidens - ZHEN Huan, SHEN Meizhuang and AN Lingrong - are sent to the imperial harem. Yet in the harem, there are murderous plots and bloodshed behind the gorgeous curtains, rendering the three girls terrified.

In the palace, SHEN Meizhuang repeatedly gets stabbed in the back. So depressed, she seeks emotional solace elsewhere, having a reunion with her childhood sweetheart. AN Lingrong, limited by her humble origin, can’t but turn to Consort Hua, the most powerful person in the harem, in order to stay alive.

ZHEN Huan, doted on by the emperor, sees the emperor in his true colours after her miscarriage and SHEN Meizhuang’s ordeal. Disheartened, she demands to leave the palace. After leaving the palace, ZHEN Huan, amid trials, meets Prince Qinghe. They fall in love with each other and pledge to go through foul and fair together. When ZHEN Huan is just immersed in the sweetness of love and the joy of becoming a mother, there comes the news that Prince Qinghe has died and her father is in jail. She can’t but return to the palace, in order to rescue her father and preserve the fruit of love.

But fate plays a cruel trick on her - just as the Royal Honor Guard arrives for her, ZHEN Huan finds that her lover remains alive. “Who can set the course of love or nail down the source of hatred?” The romantic melody turns into a dirge of grief and indignation. Returning to the palace, ZHEN Huan gives birth to Prince Qinghe’s child, only to find that she has fallen into a cunning trap, no way out. In front of Consort Hua, who is blackhearted, AN Lingrong, who is guilty of perfidy, and the emperor, who is furious and suspicious, ZHEN Huan and her child are hanging by a single thread.

August 23^rd - Shanghai Yue Opera House Empresses in the Palace II (19:30)

ZHEN Huan gets caught in a hopeless situation, and unexpectedly, Prince Qinghe turns up, so that the emperor captures something wrong with the water used for blood testing. The crisis is averted for the time being. Yet SHEN Meizhuang perishes from fright, WEN Shichu aspires to guard the mausoleum, AN Lingrong commits suicide by imperial order, and Consort Hua, the mastermind behind the scenes, is just placed under house arrest for three months.

Grieving over the loss of her sisters, ZHEN Huan is filled with grief, indignation, and anxiety. Prince Qinghe, having volunteered to go out to battle against the forces behind Consort Hua, pays a secret visit to ZHEN Huan at dead of night to comfort her and show love for her. He also gives his imperial nephew a pet name.

After her failure in the blood test - a paternity test, Consort Hua learns of the rendezvous between ZHEN Huan and Prince Qinghe. So she reports this to the emperor. However, the emperor, who has resolved to let Prince Qinghe annihilate the forces behind her, flies into a great rage and banishes Consort Hua to the Cold Palace.

Prince Qinghe returns in triumph. At the victory banquet, the emperor reenacts a scene of fluting and dancing. Then he tricks Prince Qinghe into admitting his love for ZHEN Huan. After the banquet, the emperor orders ZHEN Huan to kill Prince Qinghe with poison - or else, they both will die.

Fallen petals lie in profusion on the Tonghua Terrace. ZHEN Huan resolves to die together with Prince Qinghe, but fails. Prince Qinghe, who knows that he will certainly die, gets to know who his imperial nephew really is. So gratified, he dies with a sense of comfort, holding his deep love for ZHEN Huan.

A year later, the emperor, who has liquidated all his rivals, is terminally ill. In that final hour, he realises that he still yearns for the genuine affection he possessed, but it is too late. Everyone has left him, including ZHEN Huan, whom he still loves.

In the Cold Palace, Consort Hua, still lost in her ardent longing for the emperor’s true love, is waiting for him. However, what is left to her is nothing more than the death of her beloved and the loss of love, as well as the truth about the huanyi incense. Moved by this lovestruck woman, ZHEN Huan issues an edict that Consort Hua may leave the palace alongside any other imperial concubine willing to leave.

The apricot blossoms are in bloom again, and ZHEN Huan has reached old age. A new cycle begins in the harem…

LI Xudan is a second-class actress and successor of the “WANG (Wenjuan) School”, specialising in the portrayal of a spirited young female role and holding a diploma from the Jiangsu Province Drama School. She was taught personally by WANG Wenjuan, a contemporary Yue Opera performing artist, studied under WANG Zhiping, a contemporary Yue Opera performing artist, and also received guidance from ZHAO Shiying, a famous Yue Opera performing artist. She is a member of the China Theatre Association and Shanghai Dramatists Association.

Her representative works include A Dream of Red Mansions, Empresses in the Palace, Reunion Chronicle, The Tale of Chunhyang, The Butterfly Lovers, The Emperor and the Village Girl, A Poet’s Lament‌, Honglou·Musical Theatre in Yue Opera, The Story of Western Garden, Dingxiang, Fish Chasing, and MENG Lijun: A Stroll in the Imperial Garden & Meeting in the Study, as well as Yue Opera microfilm Xin Sheng. In 2018, she held a solo concert, Maiden·show. In 2019, she held a special concert of Yue Opera, Love·Song.

LI Xudan won the Best Newcomer Award and Outstanding Performer Award at “Yue Nyu Zheng Feng” Season I: TV Challenge‌ for Young Yue Opera Artists. Silver Award for “Costarring” and Best Newcomer Award at “Yue Nyu Zheng Feng” Season II, and Fourth “Red Plum Golden Flower Award for Chinese Opera” by the China Theatre Association. She also won the individual “Excellent Performance Award” at the Sixth Jiangsu Theatre Festival‌ for her role in Yue opera Dingxiang, and was named Emerging Chinese Opera Artist of the Year in 2023.

YANG Tingna is a first-class actress and successor of the “XU (Yulan) School”, specialising in the portrayal of a young male role and holding a diploma from the Shanghai Opera School. She was taught personally by XU Yulan, a Yue Opera performing artist, and QIAN Huili, a contemporary Yue Opera performing artist. She is a member of the 13^th and 14^th Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), a council member of the China Theatre Association, a council member of the Shanghai Dramatists Association, and a member of the 15^th Shanghai Youth Working Committee of the China Democratic League.

Her representative works include A Dream of Red Mansions, LI Shangyin, Empresses in the Palace, A Poet’s Lament‌, The Story of Jade Hairpin, The Romance of West Chamber, Fish Chasing, MENG Lijun, HAN Feizi, The Purple Jade Hairpin, The Emperor and the Village Girl, The Tale of Chunhyang, Fates of Three Sisters, The Broken Fingers, Reunion Chronicle, and others.

YANG Tingna won the Supporting Actress Award at the 24^th “Shanghai Magnolia Stage Performance Awards”, the Gold Award at the “Yue Nyu Zheng Feng”: TV Challenge‌ for Young Yue Opera Artists, the Third “Red Plum Golden Flower Award for Chinese Opera”, the “Shanghai Municipal Award for Outstanding Literary and Art Worker”, the “Shanghai May Fourth Youth Medal”, and the title of “Meritorious Woman Pacesetter of Shanghai”. She was selected for the Sixth Shanghai Literature and Art Award “Young Literary and Art Worker Training Programme”. In 2019, she was awarded the title of “Shanghai Woman Pacesetter for 2017-2018”. In 2024, she was selected for the Oriental Top-Notch Talents Programme.

WANG Qing

WANG Qing is a first-class actress and successor of the “YIN (Guifang) School”, specialising in the portrayal of a young male role and holding a diploma from the Shanghai Opera School. She was taught personally by YIN Guifang, a Yue Opera performing artist, and also studied under ZHAO Zhigang, a contemporary Yue Opera performing artist. She is a member of the China Theatre Association, Chinese Opera Performing Society and Shanghai Dramatists Association.

Her representative works include HE Wenxiu, Questioning and Looking for Wife, Gentleman Among Flowers, A Dream of Red Mansions, Desert Prince, The Upright Empress, Jade Dragonfly, Heartbound to the Homeland and Empresses in the Palace, operetta commissions The Emperor Bows to his Subject, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and Concubine YANG and The Winding Brook, experimental Yue operas The Reincarnation of MENG Lijun and Yan Ji, among others. In 2002, she held the Star of Oriental Theatre: WANG Qing’s Yue Opera Concert. In June 2007, she held the WANG Qing’s Yue Opera Concert as part of the Golden Age in Makeup: The Stage for Outstanding Young Artists of Shanghai. In 2023, she held the Yue Opera in Prosperous Times: A Special Concert by WANG Qing, A Young Male Role Player from the YIN School.

Her previous accolades include the Gold Award at the “Yue Nyu Zheng Feng”: TV Challenge‌ for Young Yue Opera Artists, Shanghai Rising Star Award for Yue Opera, Shanghai Rising Star Award for Yue Opera at “Xiaodie Cup”, “Star of the Year” by the Publicity Department of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, and “Star of Oriental Theatre” of Shanghai.

SHI Yanbin is a successor of the “JIN (Caifeng) School”, specialising in the portrayal of a spirited young female role and holding a diploma from the Zhejiang Art School. She studied under JIN Caifeng, a Yue Opera performing artist. She is a member of the Shanghai Dramatists Association.

Her representative works include The Jade Hairpin, Questioning and Looking for Wife, A Dream of Red Mansions, Empresses in the Palace, Concubine YANG Hangs Herself at Mawei Slope, Tang-Style Operetta: A Snowy Night at Mount Lishan, Fishing and Chopping Wood in Wind and Snow‌, Repudiation of the Engagement, YANG Naiwu·Joint Trial in Secret Chamber, The Princess Falls in Love, Southeast Fly the Peacocks, The Goddess of Music and the Demon of Drought, and others.

SHI Yanbin was nominated for the Newcomer Supporting Actress Award at the 24^th Shanghai Magnolia Stage Performance Awards. She also won the Rising Star Award at “Yue Nyu Zheng Feng” Season II: TV Challenge‌ for Young Yue Opera Artists, and Gold Award for Top Ten Outstanding Performers and Best Newcomer Award at “Yue Nyu Zheng Feng” Season III, and “Best Talent Award” at the “China Shines with Yue Opera” National Yue Opera Festival for Young Artists.

WANG Rousang is a first-class actress and successor of the “FAN (Ruijuan) School”, specialising in the portrayal of a young male role and holding an MFA degree from the Shanghai Theatre Academy. She was taught personally by FAN Ruijuan, a Yue Opera performing artist, ZHANG Ruihong, a contemporary Yue Opera performing artist, and CHEN Qi, a famous Yue Opera performing artist. She is a member of the China Theatre Association, a council member of the Shanghai Dramatists Association and a member of the Chinese Opera Directors Association.

Her representative works include The Butterfly Lovers, The Legend of LI Wa, Southeast Fly the Peacocks, MENG Lijun, LEI Haiqing, The Princess Falls in Love, Shiyi Brother, Meilong Town, Taming of the Princess, Empresses in the Palace and The Goddess of Music and the Demon of Drought, and experimental Yue operas The Reincarnation of MENG Lijun, Poetry in Yue Opera, Dongjun Quqi (Cave God Takes a Wife) and If I Were Not JI Kang. In March 2008, she held the “Youth in Yue Opera: WANG Rousang’s Yue Opera Concert”.

WANG Rousang won the Gold Award for “Costarring” and the title of “Top Ten Young Male Role Players” at “Yue Nyu Zheng Feng” Season II, the Fourth “Red Plum Golden Flower Award for Chinese Opera”, the Shanghai Rising Star Award for Yue Opera at “Xiaodie Cup”, the “Excellent Performance Award” at the “Youth in Yue Opera” for Young Artists, and the title of “Star of Oriental Theatre”. She is a young top‑notch talent included in the National Special Support Plan for High-level Talents.

QIU Danli

QIU Danli

QIU Danli is a first-class actress and successor of the “FU (Quanxiang) School”, specialising in the portrayal of a spirited young female role and holding a diploma from the Chinese Opera School of Shaoxing County. She was taught personally by FU Quanxiang, a Yue Opera performing artist, and LIANG Guyin, a Kunqu Opera artist. She also studied under famous Yue Opera performing artists HU Peidi, CHEN Ying and CHEN Fei. She is a member of the China Theatre Association and Shanghai Dramatists Association.

Her representative works include The Butterfly Lovers, Love Detective, The Legend of LI Wa, Yan Ji, Heartbound to the Homeland, Empresses in the Palace, Keqing Hangs Herself, Lanke Mountain·Fond Dream, Qingwen Mends the Peacock Feather Cloak, Karmic Bond‌, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and Concubine YANG·Elegy for Love at Mawei Slope, ZHOU Yu: The Pride of Jiangdong, and others. In April, 2008, she held the “Youth in Yue Opera: QIU Danli’s Yue Opera Concert”.

QIU Danli won the Third Prize for Performance at the Eighth Zhejiang Opera Festival, Excellent Performance Award at the Zhejiang Young Yue Opera Artists’ Grand Prix, Silver Award at the National “Yue Nyu Zheng Feng”: TV Challenge‌ for Young Yue Opera Artists, “Nomination for New Lead Actress Award” at the 17^th Shanghai Magnolia Stage Performance Awards, and Performance Award at the “Youth in Yue Opera” for Young Artists.

CHEN Huidi

CHEN Huidi is a first-class actress and successor of the “YUAN (Xuefen) School”, specialising in the portrayal of a spirited young female role and holding a diploma from the Shanghai Opera School. She was taught personally by FANG Yafen, a contemporary Yue Opera performing artist. She is a member of the Shanghai Dramatists Association and China Theatre Association.

Her representative works include The Romance of West Chamber, HE Wenxiu, Heartbound to the Homeland, HAN Feizi, A Dream of Red Mansions, The Purple Jade Hairpin, The Princess Falls in Love, The Butterfly Lovers, Empresses in the Palace, If I Were Not JI Kang, The Precarious Grand View Garden·The Death of Siqi, LYU Bu and Diaochan·Intimate Banquet, Attachment to the Homeland·Sending a Letter, A Tale of Laughter and Tears‌·A Date, and others.

WANG Jie

WANG Jie is a first-class actress and successor of the “FU (Quanxiang) School”, specialising in the portrayal of a demure female role and holding a diploma from the Shanghai Opera School. She was taught personally by FU Quanxiang, a Yue Opera performing artist, studied under HU Peidi, a famous Yue Opera performing artist, and received guidance from CHEN Ying, a famous Yue Opera performing artist. She is a member of the China Theatre Association and Shanghai Dramatists Association.

Her representative works include The Butterfly Lovers, Southeast Fly the Peacocks, The Broken Fingers, Love Detective, The Legend of LI Wa, Blue Gown·Red Robe, The Last Empress, Empresses in the Palace, Tanchun Says Goodbye to Her Mother, Yu the Beauty, Xishi and FAN Li, FAN Jin Passes the Provincial Examination‌, HAN Feizi, and others.

WANG Jie was nominated for the Shanghai Rising Star Award for Yue Opera at “Xiaodie Cup”.

Shanghai Yue Opera House
The Shanghai Yue Opera House was founded in March 1955, with YUAN Xuefen as its first president. It is a traditional Chinese opera troupe renowned both at home and abroad, a designated protector of national intangible cultural heritage, a key national theatre for local opera creation and performance, and a base for the inheritance and development of Yue Opera in China. Over the years, the Shanghai Yue Opera House has created, transplanted and rearranged over 450 operas of different genres. Among them, The Butterfly Lovers, The Romance of West Chamber, A Dream of Red Mansions and Mrs. Xiang Lin are widely regarded as the “Four Great Classics” of Chinese Yue Opera. A large number of excellent productions, including Stage Sisters, Home, Meilong Town, Spring in Isolation‌, Mrs. Yu Qing, The Chinese Orphan, Yu the Beauty, Late Autumn, Empresses in the Palace, A Poet’s Lament‌ and Deep Bond between the Guizhou Mountain Region and Shanghai, have garnered numerous accolades including the Wenhua Award for New Production, Excellent Production Award at the China Theatre Festival, Gold Award at the China Population and Culture Awards, Gold Award and Excellent Production Award at the China Yue Opera Festival, and National Award for Excellent Local Opera. Having long enjoyed the care and support of leaders at both central and local levels, the Shanghai Yue Opera House often appears on international stages, such as the “Meeting between Chinese and French Heads of State”, held during the China International Import Expo, and World Laureates Forum (WLA), to showcase the distinctive charm of Yue Opera. Guided by its distinctive development plan - “to bring Yue Opera to the fore in the East through cultural inheritance and innovation”, the Shanghai Yue Opera House, which is committed to stage presentation, keeps on producing literary and artistic works to reflect the new spirit of the times, eulogise the creativity of people, and promote the red culture, Shanghai-style culture and Jiangnan culture.

*Please purchase tickets through authorized channels to avoid counterfeiting. Before completing your purchase, please verify the performance date, time, venue, and seat number carefully. Performance tickets are time-sensitive and limited in availability. Once a transaction has been completed, tickets are non-exchangeable, non-refundable and cannot be reissued if lost. Please double-check all ticketing details and securely retain your physical ticket or electronic order. If you are unable to attend due to personal reasons, please make your own arrangements regarding the use of your tickets. We appreciate your understanding as any inconvenience caused.

*The cast, programme, or other performance details are subject to change and shall be based on the live performance. In the event of major adjustments - such as changes to the performance date or lead cast - please refer to the official announcements issued by the NCPA and follow the relevant procedures as instructed.

*The NCPA opens 90 minutes before performances, and 60 minutes before art education lectures and similar events. Auditorium entry begins 45 minutes before performances. For all performances and events, the Northern entrance serves as the sole public entrance. Please ensure that ticket scanning and security screening are completed prior to entry, and allow sufficient time to avoid delays.

*Tickets must be retained in their original, intact condition. Admission will be denied for tickets lacking a stub, or bearing any alterations, obscured information, or defacement. Each ticket is valid for a single entry on the date of the performance. For certain performances, presentation of original valid identification documents is required. Admission will be granted only when the ticket information corresponds with the presented identification.

*Recommended admission height: 1.2 meters and above. Special provisions may apply to certain performances or events, as indicated on the corresponding ticketing page.

*All attendees are required to undergo security screening upon entry. Smoking and open flames are strictly prohibited within the NCPA premises. Prohibited items include, but not limited to, firearms and replicas, controlled knives, flammable or explosive substances, toxic or hazardous materials, corrosive substances, and radioactive materials. Any prohibited items discovered will be handed over to public security authorities.

*For safety and hygiene reasons, the NCPA does not provide storage services for food, beverages, or similar items. The following items are not permitted inside the NCPA: food and drinks, flags & banners, electronic cigarettes, power banks exceeding 20000mAh, flowers, recording or photography equipment, and oversized luggage.

*Attendees are requested to address appropriately. Admissions will be denied to individuals who are improperly attired or under the influence of alcohol.

*If you are late, please wait quietly in the audience waiting area. Entry will be permitted under the guidance of ushers during appropriate intermissions or between movements, and you are requested to take the nearest available seat with minimal disturbance. For concerts consisting of a single piece - either for the entire performance or a complete half - late arrivals and audience who leave midway will not be admitted.

*All attendees are requested to observe proper performance etiquette. Please keep quiet and remain seated throughout the entire performance. Mobile phones should be turned off or set to silent mode, and calls should not be made in the auditorium. Photography, audio, or video recording of the performance is strictly prohibited without prior permission. The use of flashlights, including phone flashlights, is not allowed.
