Adapted from Ming Dynasty playwright TANG Xianzu’s 55-scene masterpiece The Peony Pavilion: The Return of the Soul, this dance drama is co-presented by Suzhou Cultural Investment and Development Group and He Sheng Dance Theatre.
Respecting the original text while applying a contemporary perspective, the narrative unfolds in two parts: “The Dream Scroll” and “The Painting Scroll”, condensing the original into a narrative featuring six core characters: DU Liniang, LIU Mengmei, Chunxiang, the Flower Fairy, CHEN Zuiliang, and the Infernal Judge. It follows the romance between DU Liniang, daughter of the Nan’an Prefect, and LIU Mengmei, a scholar from Lingnan—a love that transcends life and death. The former follows DU Liniang as she steps out of her boudoir, discovers spring’s beauty, meets LIU Mengmei in a dream, and ultimately dies of heartbreak after fruitlessly chasing that vision. The latter traces LIU Mengmei’s arrival as he finds Liniang’s portrait and calls out to his fated lover. Bound by their ultimate devotion, the two transcend the boundaries of life and death, culminating in Liniang’s resurrection.
The staging embraces the minimalist elegance of liubai (leaving blank), using the iconic “white walls and golden bricks” of Suzhou gardens as its core visual motifs to create a poetic space of Eastern aesthetics. A 3.5-meter thrust stage extension symbolizing the Peony Pavilion extends directly into the auditorium. This breaks the traditional proscenium stage, bringing the lovers’ dream encounter right before the audience for an immersive experience. The dancers’ costumes feature a palette of muted tones and elegant gradients, deeply integrating the aesthetics of the Southern Song Dynasty. The stage is cloaked in theatrical mist that flows alongside the dancers’ movements, delivering a theatrical experience where dream and reality blur.

The Peony Pavilion - Dream
DU Liniang, the daughter of the Prefect of Nan’an, learns etiquette in her private classroom, drowsy with spring languor by the window.
One day, drawn by the Flower Goddess, she wanders into the rear garden, where she sees splendid spring scenery, which is, however, neglected, with brilliant purples and reds left to wither behind crumbling walls.
Distressed in spring, she returns and falls into a dream, where she meets a young scholar holding a willow branch. Touched by stirrings of love, they share an intimate union in the Peony Pavilion.
Waking from the dream, she searches in vain for traces of him, with all lost to a fleeting dream.
With no hope of reunion, she draws her own portrait under a plum tree, then passing away below the Mid-Autumn moon.
What is hidden behind the dream is a stirring infatuation and an unyielding conviction.
Then, she opens her eyes for the first time to a clear awareness of “self”.
She steps freely into the destiny she has chosen - this is what it means to be truly human.
The Peony Pavilion - Portrait
LIU Mengmei, a young scholar from the Lingnan region, journeys to the capital for the imperial examinations. Rescued from a drowning accident, he takes a lodging in the DU house.
In the Peony Pavilion, he chances upon Liniang’s portrait under the guidance of the Flower Goddess.
At midnight, as he calls out softly, a female figure appears - she reveals herself as a visitor from the underworld. Their eyes meet, with love blossoming between the living and the dead.
In the City of the Unjustly Dead, the judge makes a judgment, with flowers gathering in circles and ghosts assembling in throngs.
Her devotion moves heaven and earth while he unfurls the scroll and rushes to meet her.
How can I recognize you among a thousand portraits?
Even if I can, I must then push through the crowd and cross mountains to hold your hand and look into your eyes.
Fortunately, I am brave, and you believe in me.
What can finally pierce through human indifference? - Could it be, simply, love?
LI Xing Director / Choreographer
LI Xing is a young dance artist. He has successively won the Wenhua Award for Outstanding Production, the National “Five-One Project” Award, the China Dance Lotus Award for Dance Drama, as well as more than 20 gold medals in top domestic and international dance competitions, including the National Dance Competition, CCTV Dance Competition, Seoul International Dance Competition, Rome Contemporary Dance Competition, and Hannover International Choreography Competition. In 2018, he founded his own studio to explore diverse forms of expression in contemporary theatre, attracting leading artists from various fields around the world for cross-disciplinary collaborations and creating groundbreaking artistic spaces with diverse aesthetics. His directing and choreographic works include The Peony Pavilion, Train Station, Dream of the Red Chamber, Grand Hotel, and Dream Chaser. His starring performances include One Stroke One Dot, Heavenly Road, Mulan, Silk Road, Qingyi, and Shawan Memories.
HUANG Jiayuan Director / Choreographer
HUANG Jiayuan is a choreographer and director at the Beijing Opera and Dance Theatre. She graduated from the Choreography Department of the Beijing Dance Academy. Her directed and choreographed works include the dance dramas The Peony Pavilion, Five Stars Rising in the East, Jinggang - Jinggang, The Butterfly Lovers, Love - Fate, and What a Cool and Pleasant Autumn; the dance theatre production One Moment; and dance works such as Flying Bird Bun, Southern Wind, Song of White Hair, Plain Shadows over the Southern Mountain, A Child Travels a Thousand Miles, Azaleas in Bloom, and Auspicious Tree.
LUO Huaizhen Playwright
LUO Huaizhen is a renowned contemporary playwright and drama theorist, serving as Advisor to the China Theatre Association, Advisor to the China Literary Critics Association, and Advisor to the China Centre of the International Theatre Institute (ITI). He is a First-Class Playwright at the Shanghai Playwriting Centre, Professor at the Shanghai Theatre Academy, and Doctoral Supervisor at the Chinese National Academy of Arts. He is recognized as one of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee’s “Four Batches” talents, receives a State Council expert allowance, and was awarded the title of “Outstanding Kunqu Opera Playwright” by the former Ministry of Culture. Since the 1980s, he has devoted himself to the creative practice and theoretical exploration of the modernization of traditional theatre and the urbanization of regional theatre. Entering the 21st century, he proposed the “Four Eras” theory for the contemporary development of Chinese theatre. His major stage works include the dance dramas The Crested Ibis, The Eternal Wave, Source of the Great River, Eighteen Songs of a Nomad Flute, and Leading Role; the ballet The Butterfly Lovers; the Huai Opera works Golden Dragon and Ephemera, The Overlord of Western Chu, and Mr. WU Xun; the Yue Opera works Meilong Town, LI Qingzhao, and My Grand View Garden; the Kunqu Opera works BAN Zhao and National Style; the Peking Opera works Xishi Returns to Yue and Anecdotes of the Jian’an Era; the Yong Opera work Pawned Wife; the Sichuan Opera work LI Yaxian; the Xiang Opera work Madam, If You See; and the spoken drama Lanling King, among others. His published monographs include Collected Dramatic Works of LUO Huaizhen, Collection of LUO Huaizhen’s Plays, and Collection of LUO Huaizhen’s Lectures. He has received more than one hundred national-level literary and artistic awards. Some of his plays have been translated into English, French, Japanese, Korean, and other languages for publication and performance.
ZHAO Bo Composer
ZHAO Bo is a First-Class Composer, a member of the Chinese Musicians Association, and a recipient of the National High-level Talent Special Support Plan (Young Top-notch Talent Programme). He graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music, where he studied under Professors HAO Weiya and GUAN Peng. His works have received the Outstanding Works Award of the 17th "Five-One Project" for the Promotion of Cultural and Ethical Progress, the 18th Wenhua Repertoire Award, and the "Dance Drama Award" and "Contemporary Dance Award" at the 13th China Dance Lotus Awards. His representative works include the ethnic dance drama Dream of the Red Chamber, the dance work Bay, the opening ceremony performance Beginning of Spring for the Beijing Winter Olympics, and Misty Rain Over Jiangnan for the opening ceremony of the Hangzhou Asian Games.
REN Dongsheng Set & Lightning Designer
REN Dongsheng is the Director of the Department of Stage Design at the Beijing Dance Academy, a professor, and a First-Class Stage Designer. He serves as Executive Deputy Director of the Lighting Committee of the China Institute of Stage Design, initiator, member of the Artistic Committee, and Visual Director of the Liangshan International Theatre Festival, doctoral supervisor at the Central Academy of Drama, guest professor at the Shanghai Theatre Academy, guest professor and master's supervisor at the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, and specially appointed professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He has received numerous national awards, including the Wenhua Award and the "Five-One Project" Award, as well as the "Best Stage Design Award" at Russia's Benois de la Danse. Representative works include the conceptual performance Dialogue - Fable 2047, the dance dramas The Heavenly Road, Eternal Wave, A Panorama of Mountains and Rivers, and Wing Chun, the plays The Pillowman, The Wave, Age of Awakening, and Far Away, as well as the large-scale epic productions The Great Journey and Justice Will Prevail.
HU Tianji Stage Visual Designer
HU Tianji is a multimedia designer at the National Theatre of China. He graduated from the Mural Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2001 and went to France for further study in 2003. After returning to China, he founded Zhengyue Imaging Studio, engaging in CG film and television post-production special effects and stage multimedia interactive imaging. Representative works include the dance dramas Goddess of the Luo River, The Twenty-Four Solar Terms, Deep in Memory, The Twelve Chinese Zodiac Signs, Human Realm of the Flower World, Awakening Lion, Dunhuang, and Dream Chaser; the operas Red River Valley, River of Fortune, The Dawns Here Are Quiet, The Long March, LIN Huiyin, Jinsha River, Manas, and Shennong of Heaven and Earth; the dramas Peer Gynt, Jiawu Memorial Ceremony, In the Name of the People, Red Rose and White Rose, and LIN Zexu; and the musicals Alzheimer’s Love Memory, Splendid Guoyun Tower, and YANG Yuelou.
LI Kun Costume Designer
LI Kun is a costume designer. After studying dance in her youth, she transitioned into costume design. Since 2010, she has maintained a long-term collaboration with the National Ballet of China and has worked with numerous renowned dance companies and artists in China and abroad. She has been invited to serve as a collaborating designer for the Paris Opera Ballet, the Finnish National Ballet, the Hamburg Ballet, the Royal Ballet of Flanders in Antwerp, and the Hessisches Staatstheater in Germany. Her representative works include Dunhuang and Hamlet for the National Ballet of China, Horizon for the Paris Opera Ballet, Born of the Earth for the Finnish National Ballet, the ethnic dance drama Dream of the Red Chamber, the Jiangsu Grand Theatre production of The Rite of Spring, the dance theatre works Train Station and Rising Quietly, and the Yue opera My Grand View Garden, among others.
JIA Lei Styling Designer
JIA Lei is a styling designer with the China Oriental Performing Arts Group and has been honoured with the titles of “Top Ten Makeup and Styling Artists in China” and “Asia’s Top 100 Outstanding Stylists.” Stage production styling designs include: Confucius, Goddess of the Luo River, Memories of Shawan, MEI Lanfang, The Silk Road, Dream of the Red Chamber, Heavenly Road, The Eternal Wave, Heroic Sisters of the Grassland, The Five Stars Rise in the East, The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting, and Wing Chun, among others.
CUI Lei Dramaturgy
CUI Lei is a playwright at the National Theatre of China, and a member of the China Theatre Association and the Beijing Dramatists Association. Representative works include the dance theatre productions Train Station and The Rite of Spring, the ethnic dance drama Dream of the Red Chamber, the play NIU Tianci, and the ethnic opera On the Road to Poverty Alleviation.
HU Jieas DU Liniang
HU Jie
HU Jie is a young professional dancer who graduated from the PLA Academy of Arts. She has received numerous prestigious honours, including the 18th Wenhua Award for Outstanding Production, the Performance Gold Award at the 9th China Dance “Lotus Award”, the Individual Performance Silver Award at the 10th National Military Arts Festival, the Performance Gold Award at the 2nd National Military Dance Competition, and the Performance Silver Award at the 6th Dance Competition of Five Northern Chinese Provinces and One Municipality.
She has also participated in major international events, including the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2015 IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Beijing.

HUANG Huihui is a young professional dancer who graduated from the Department of Chinese Classical Dance at Beijing Dance Academy, where she was selected for the department’s Elite Talent Development Programme.
She has received numerous honours, including the Gold Award at the IUCDC International Online Dance Competition and the “Outstanding Newcomer and New Work” distinction at the 6th Shanghai Newcomers and New Works Dance Competition. She was also named an “Outstanding Performing Talent” at the 13th Taoli Cup Dance Exhibition and received Second Prize in the Professional Youth Category of the Beijing Division at the 11th Dance Competition of Five Northern Chinese Provinces.
HUANG received an “Outstanding Individual” award for her participation in the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympic Games. She has also participated in the Chinese Classical Dance Forum of the BDA Dance Forum at Beijing Dance Academy. Internationally, she performed in Romania at The Beauty Beyond Words, commemorating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Romania, as well as at the Sibiu International Theatre Festival.

LUO Yuwenas LIU Mengmei
LUO Yuwen
LUO Yuwen is a young professional dancer who graduated from the Department of Chinese Classical Dance at Beijing Dance Academy. He has received numerous prestigious honours, including the 18th Wenhua Award for Outstanding Production, the 17th Wenhua Grand Award, the 16th “Five-One Project” Award for the Development of Socialist Spiritual Civilization, First Prize at the Beijing Dance Competition, First Prize at the Dance Competition of Five Northern Chinese Provinces, and Third Prize at the Seoul International Dance Competition.
He has performed several times on CCTV’s New Year’s Eve Gala, as well as at numerous major televised arts and cultural events.

WANG Shengxias LIU Mengmei
WANG Shengxi
WANG Shengxi is a young professional dancer who graduated from the Department of Chinese Classical Dance at Beijing Dance Academy. In 2022, he was selected for the department’s Elite Talent Development Programme.
He received the Gold Award at the 2021 IUCDC Dance Competition, the New Work Award at the 6th Shanghai Newcomers and New Works Dance Competition, and two Gold Awards for Performance and Choreography at the 13th Beijing Dance Competition. He has also participated in productions nominated for the 13th and 14th China Dance “Lotus Award”. At the 13th Taoli Cup Dance Exhibition, he was awarded an “Outstanding Performing Talent” in the Youth Male Category of Chinese Classical Dance. In 2024, he travelled to Romania to participate in a series of events celebrating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Romania.

ZHANG Yinas Chunxiang
ZHANG Yin
ZHANG Yin is a young professional dancer who graduated from the Dance Academy of Shanghai Theatre Academy. She has worked with Shanghai Dance Company, XIE Xin Dance Theatre, and HU Shenyuan Studio.
She has received numerous prestigious honours, including the Dance Drama Award at the 10th and 13th China Dance “Lotus Awards”, the “Five-One Project” Award, the Gold Award for Contemporary Dance at the 13th Seoul International Dance Competition, the Gold Award at the Dance Competition of Six Eastern Chinese Provinces, and the Gold Award at the Shanghai Newcomers and New Works Dance Competition.
She has performed at international arts festivals in Germany, France, and Croatia, including the Stuttgart Festival of the Arts, and has also appeared multiple times in major televised arts galas produced by CCTV, often as a featured lead dancer.
Her representative works include The Peony Pavilion, He Theatre: Masters’ Night, The Grand Hotel, The Train Station, Absolute Test, A Stroke, A Line, Wandering, The Crested Ibis, Slow - Vast, Obsession, The Red Curtain, Hearing the Body, Rainbow in the Dark, and INVISIBLE SOUNDS, a resident artist production by Hofesh Shechter.
MA Chias Chunxiang
MA Chi
MA Chi is a young professional dancer who graduated from the Dance Drama Performance programme at the Central Academy of Drama. She has received numerous awards, including First Prize for Performance at the 19th Beijing Dance Competition in 2025, a Special Award at the 21st Seoul International Dance Competition, the Gold Award at the 2024 Korea International Modern Dance Competition, and the Gold Award for Ballet Solo at the 2023 IDC China Competition. She also received the Gold Award and Theatre Award at the 2023–2024 PDE International Dance Showcase, as well as the Gold Award at a provincial skills competition.
In 2024, MA was awarded the Overall Champion in the Women’s Division of the Top Dancer Technique Competition and received the title of Top Dancer of the Year.

LI Qianas Flower Goddess
LI Qian
LI Qian is a young professional dancer who graduated from the PLA Academy of Arts. She has received numerous prestigious honors, including the 18th Wenhua Award for Outstanding Production, the Wenhua Grand Award at the 7th China Arts Festival, the Gold Award at the 8th National Military Arts Competition, and the Gold Award at the 6th Taoli Cup Dance Competition.
She represented China in the eight-minute cultural performance at the closing ceremony of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, and participated in the opening ceremony of the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou. She has also appeared numerous times on the stage of the CCTV Spring Festival Gala.

SUN Can
SUN Can is a young professional dancer and a member of the Beijing Dance Academy Youth Dance Company. She has received numerous honors, including a nomination at the 14th China Dance “Lotus Award” for Chinese Classical Dance, First Prize in the Individual Category at the National Vocational College Skills Competition, First Prize for Performance at the Shanghai Newcomers and New Works Showcase, and First Prize for Individual Performance in the Professional Youth Category at the 16th Beijing Dance Competition. She also participated in the 12th “Taoli Cup” National Arts Academies Artistic Achievement Showcase.
In 2023, SUN Can performed at the Great Hall of the People as part of the Third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.

YU Jianweias CHEN Zuiliang

YU Jianwei is a young professional dancer who graduated from the PLA Academy of Arts. He has received numerous prestigious honors, including the “Five-One Project” Award, the Wenhua Award, the Gold Award at the CCTV Dance Competition, the Special Award from the National Dance Competition Organizing Committee, and First Prize at the National Military Arts Festival.
His representative works include The Peony Pavilion, He Theatre: Masters’ Night, The Grand Hotel, The Train Station, Heroes of the Lüliang Mountains, Dream of the Red Chamber, Dream Chaser, Seeking the Way at Mount Kongtong, The Heavenly Road, My Dream, and I’m Fine.

YANG Wenyi
YANG Wenyi is a young professional dancer with the Suzhou Opera & Dance Drama Theatre. He graduated from the Department of Chinese Classical Dance at Beijing Dance Academy.
He has received numerous honours, including the Outstanding Performance Award in the Youth Folk Dance Category at the 9th Taoli Cup Dance Competition, the Chinese Classical Dance Award at the 11th China Dance “Lotus Award”, First Prize at the 8th Dance Competition of Five Northern Chinese Provinces, the Dance Award at the 7th Jiangsu Literature and Arts Awards, and recognition as an Outstanding Young Dancer of Jiangsu Province. He has also received the Outstanding Performance Award at the Zijin Culture and Arts Festival and the Gold Award for Performance at the 8th Jiangsu Literature and Arts Awards Dance Competition.

LI Zheng
LI Zheng is a young professional dancer who graduated from the Department of Chinese Classical Dance at Beijing Dance Academy. He previously worked with the Guangdong Song and Dance Theatre.
He has received numerous honours, including the Contemporary Dance Award at the 13th China Dance “Lotus Award”, the honourary title of “Young Dancer” at the 4th Central and Southern China Young Dancers Awards, the Gold Award for “Top 10 Young Leading Dancers” at the 4th Central and Southern China Young Dancers Awards, the title of “Top 10 Young Leading Dancers” at the 3rd Central and Southern China Young Dancers Awards, and the Gold Award for Solo Dance at the 8th Guangdong Lingnan Dance Competition. He also received the Contemporary Dance Award at the 11th China Dance “Lotus Award” and was awarded “Outstanding Dancer of 2023” by the Guangdong Dancers Association.

WU Yuchengas Judge (of the underworld)
WU Yucheng
WU Yucheng is a freelance dancer and choreographer. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the PLA Academy of Arts and is currently pursuing a master’s degree at Shanghai Theatre Academy. He is also a supported artist under the China Dancers Association’s Young Dance Talent Development Programme.
He received the Silver Award for Choreography at the Seoul International Dance Competition and has won First Prize in Dance Performance and Second Prize in Choreography multiple times at the “Cultural China” Creative and Innovative Competition for Chinese Graduate Students. His works have been shortlisted multiple times for the final showcase of the China Dance “Lotus Award” Contemporary Dance Competition and have repeatedly received the Outstanding New Work Award at the Shanghai Newcomers and New Works Dance Showcase.
His representative works include The Peony Pavilion, The Eternal Wave, Happy Birthday, Territory, Secret World, On a Deserted Island, Raining, and Frog, etc.

*The NCPA opens 90 minutes before performances, and 60 minutes before art education lectures and similar events. Auditorium entry begins 45 minutes before performances. For all performances and events, the Northern entrance serves as the sole public entrance. Please ensure that ticket scanning and security screening are completed prior to entry, and allow sufficient time to avoid delays.
*Tickets must be retained in their original, intact condition. Admission will be denied for tickets lacking a stub, or bearing any alterations, obscured information, or defacement. Each ticket is valid for a single entry on the date of the performance. For certain performances, presentation of original valid identification documents is required. Admission will be granted only when the ticket information corresponds with the presented identification.
*Recommended admission height: 1.2 meters and above. Special provisions may apply to certain performances or events, as indicated on the corresponding ticketing page.
*All attendees are required to undergo security screening upon entry. Smoking and open flames are strictly prohibited within the NCPA premises. Prohibited items include, but not limited to, firearms and replicas, controlled knives, flammable or explosive substances, toxic or hazardous materials, corrosive substances, and radioactive materials. Any prohibited items discovered will be handed over to public security authorities.
*For safety and hygiene reasons, the NCPA does not provide storage services for food, beverages, or similar items. The following items are not permitted inside the NCPA: food and drinks, flags & banners, electronic cigarettes, power banks exceeding 20000mAh, flowers, recording or photography equipment, and oversized luggage.
*Attendees are requested to address appropriately. Admissions will be denied to individuals who are improperly attired or under the influence of alcohol.
*If you are late, please wait quietly in the audience waiting area. Entry will be permitted under the guidance of ushers during appropriate intermissions or between movements, and you are requested to take the nearest available seat with minimal disturbance. For concerts consisting of a single piece - either for the entire performance or a complete half - late arrivals and audience who leave midway will not be admitted.
*All attendees are requested to observe proper performance etiquette. Please keep quiet and remain seated throughout the entire performance. Mobile phones should be turned off or set to silent mode, and calls should not be made in the auditorium. Photography, audio, or video recording of the performance is strictly prohibited without prior permission. The use of flashlights, including phone flashlights, is not allowed.
*After the performance, please exit the auditoriums in an orderly manner. Loitering is discouraged.
