During the upcoming National Day holiday, the NCPA will present 29 performances of 11 works to radiate the Chinese charms, including Chinese opera The Red Guards on Honghu Lake, Vienna Boys Choir Concert, NCPA drama commission The LEI Family, the Royal Architects with strong flavour of Beijing culture, and director HUANG Ying’s The Journey to the West in “NCPA Young Directors’ Works Invitational Exhibition”, etc.
NCPA Opera The Red Guards on Honghu Lake
Operas
The opera The Red Guards on Honghu Lake was rehearsed for the first time in 1958, which met with great success at the premiere. In 2012, NCPA and Hubei Opera & Dance Theatre (copyright owner of The Red Guards on Honghu Lake) produced a new version of The Red Guards on Honghu Lake, which was jointly created by chief director ZHANG Jigang and a Chinese national A-list creative team. Singers WANG Qingshuang, WU Na and MA Yaqin played the leading female role of “HAN Ying,” while film and TV stars LI Qi and DU Xudong also joined the performance. Revised on the basis of the original music and script, The Red Guards on Honghu Lake is highly praised by opera lovers in its four rounds of performances. 2018 marks the 60th anniversary of creation and rehearsal of The Red Guards on Honghu Lake. The NCPA will present this opera again on October 1st-6th with the same cast.
The Vienna Boys Choir
Concerts
The Vienna Boys Choir’s repertoire ranges from medieval to contemporary music. Motets and lieder form the core of the touring repertoire, as do the choir’s own arrangements of Viennese music. The choir also performs children’s operas and world music. At the concert on October 4th, the choir will offer a music feast with representative works by the Strauss family and feature a selection of repertoires with diverse styles, including Chim Chim Cher-ee (a classical repertoire in the Disney film Mary Poppins), Somewhere (an excerpt from West Side Story directed by Bernstein), Chorus of Street-boys (an excerpt from opera Carmen) and the Indian-style Folk Song of Crow Indians. The choir is will also present such Chinese songs as Gao Shan Chin and Let’s Swing the Paddle.
Many domestic excellent orchestras and musicians will also hit the stage, including Beijing Symphony Orchestra, China National Opera House Symphony Orchestra, Beijing Wind Orchestra, China Film Symphony Orchestra and China NCPA Octet. On October 7th, soprano HE Hui will cooperate with Arena of Verona String Quartet to present classic opera arias by many great composers (such as Puccini, Bizet, Giordano) in a unique form.
NCPA Opera Commission The LEI Family, the Royal Architects
Dramas
From September 29th to October 6th, the NCPA drama commission The LEI Family, the Royal Architects will be staged at NCPA Theatre. Playwright HUANG Weiruo, director CAO Qijing, set designer GAO Guangjian and other Chinese national A-list creatives join hands to bring full play to this family-country legend. With the artistic expression means in distinct Beijing style, historical background and cultural connotation condensed in this city, the great creative power of the working people, the lofty national spirit and traditional Chinese culture are demonstrated in lively way. Chinese actor WANG Jishi will work together with the NCPA Drama Ensemble to show various stage figures in The LEI Family, the Royal Architects.
HUANG Ying’s work The Journey to the West
From September 30th to October 5th, HUANG Ying’s work The Journey to the West will be presented at the NCPA Multi-functional Theatre. Following A Pipe Dream, this is the second “New National Drama” work created by HUANG Ying to roll out a storyline on Monk Xuanzang, who goes on a pilgrimage for Buddhist scriptures, meets SHI Pantuo, SUN Wukong, ZHU Bajie, Monk SHA…Despite the vicissitudes of life, Monk Xuanzang finally arrives at his destination. The concept of “New National Drama” crystallizes HUANG Ying’s inspiration from “National Drama Movement” of the 1920s. HUANG Ying explores a new type of stage presentation, striving to integrate Peking Opera, Kunqu Opera, Nuo Opera, Face Change, Guqin and other traditional Chinese art forms, and enable traditional art forms to reinvigorate with new vitality.
