NCPA has just announced its 2016 opera season including five newly produced operas, three world premieres, six revivals and an operetta gala.
NCPA is to open the new opera season with Amilcare Ponchielli's La Gioconda. From January 27 to 31, this production will be staged with world-renowned conductor Daniel Oren on the podium conducting the NCPA Orchestra and Chorus, leading opera director Pier Luigi Pizzi as the director, stage and costume designer and excellent singers at home and abroad on the stage, presenting the groundbreaking verismo opera.
Following that, we will have Wager’s T?nnh?user as the opening opera for this year’s Opera Festival. And operas to be staged during the festival also include two revivals of Verdi’s La Traviata (April 20) and Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia (July 13), a new production of Dvorak’s Rusalka (May 17), a world premiere of NCPA’s newly commissioned opera Long March (June 30) and an operetta gala on June 1.
The year 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. To commemorate this great soul, NCPA will present its production of Verdi’s Macbeth based on his play of the same title. And after the successful cooperation between NCPA and the Mariinsky Theatre in Eugene Onegin in 2015, the two will also continue the partnership by staging another great opera, War and Peace, a two-act opera composed by Prokofiev in October.
2016 will also see three world premieres for NCPA’s opera commissions. Long March is a revolution themed opera celebrating the 80th anniversary of victory of Chinese Red Army's Long March. Lanhuahua tells the love tragedy of a rural girl from the northern area of Shaanxi Province. And the season's closing opera Genghis Khan is based on the life story of the founder and the Great Khan (emperor) of the Mongol Empire, which became the largest contiguous empire in history after his demise.
Beside the two revivals in Opera Festival 2016, NCPA's highly acclaimed commission Visitors on the Snow Mountain and Fang Zhimin, Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and Donizetti’s Don Pasquale will also hit the stage again.
