Performed onstage in the Concert Hall were the “Sing for Beijing”-themed musical works composed by ten contemporary Chinese composers, including YIN Qing, ZANG Yunfei, YANG Fan, HAO Weiya, CAI Dongzhen, ZHAO Jiping, ZHANG Qianyi, DU Mingxin, MENG Weidong and TANG Jianping, commissioned by the NCPA.
Under the baton of NCPA Music Director LÜ Jia, artists such as YAO Hong, ZHANG Ningjia, YUAN Fang and ZHAO Ning gave a performance of catchy tunes together with the China NCPA Chorus and China NCPA Orchestra, showing the fascinating charms of Beijing and a high-spirited look of the new era.
In 2018, the NCPA has strengthened its efforts to create songs and choral works, two artistic formats familiar to the mass, and produce cultural works popular among the public.
Chinese soprano YAO Hong, who attended the evening performance, said, “The ‘Sing for Beijing’ Concert of NCPA Commissioned Works is of great significance. Beijing is a historic city, where the people are immersed in culture and art in their daily life. There are innumerable songs about Beijing, but we should compose new ballads for the new era.”
That evening, under famous conductor and music director of NCPA LÜ Jia’s leadership, singers YAO Hong, ZHANG Ningjia, LI Xintong, LI Mengjia, JIN Zhengjian, WANG Kai, DONG Fang, YANG Yanting, and LIU Songhu attended the world premiere of eight new works commissioned under the theme of Beijing in collaboration with the China NCPA Chorus and China NCPA Orchestra.
Composer YANG Fan, who composed music for the NCPA dance drama commission The Railway to Tibet, appeared with his new work Fly with the Dream, which was sung by LIU Songhu on the stage. YANG Fan said, “This work is about ourselves. We are depicting our dreams in the golden autumn of Beijing. The ‘little teenagers’ in the lyrics may be a portrayal of every young person pursuing for his or her dream in Beijing.”
Beijing Waltz by lyricist QIAO Fang and composer HAO Weiya has a lilting melody, which sounds more graceful and engaging with soprano YAO Hong’s voice. The first half of the concert ended in the singing of Beijing, a chorus composed by lyricist QU Yuan and composer ZHANG Qianyi. Members of the China NCPA Chorus sang in a full and affectionate voice, showing the youthful spirit of Beijing in a new era.
In the second half of the concert, pianist YUAN Fang performed composer DU Mingxin’s Ode to Beijing with China NCPA Orchestra. The flowing melody on her fingertips talked about the changes of Beijing, with the piano and orchestra working in perfect unison, building an “indescribable city of Beijing” in music.
The whole concert ended in the performance of Linglong Tower and Bell and Drum Tower, two pieces from Beijing Chorus by playwright ZOU Jingzhi and composers MENG Weidong and TANG Jianping.
Beijing’s distinctive status as a global famous cultural city is highlighted in this large-scale symphonic chorus composed based on the central axis of Beijing in order to reveal the historical culture and folk customs of China’s capital city.
