On June 18th, the 10th round of NCPA drama Returning Home on a Snowy Night was staged, kicking off NCPA International Theatre Festival 2019. The drama stars ZHANG Qiuge, YU Shaoqun, CHENG Lisha and DONG Wenliang.
The story about Peking Opera actor WEI Liansheng unfolded in a stage set featuring the crowded theatre, posh government building, luxuriant cherry-apple trees, spacious courtyard on a snowy night in severe winter.
At the bustling theatre, the popular Peking Opera actor WEI Liansheng is welcoming visitors and seeing them off backstage, enjoying all sorts of “benefits” brought about by his high reputation.
So self-satisfied, he is, however disenchanted by his admirer Yuchun, a concubine of the chief justice. He realizes that he is just “something” chased after and fed by others and never considers to become a dignified man.
So he begins to resist and make a decision, but the love born of something negligible gets nipped in the bud. Yuchun fails to control her own destiny, while WEI is driven out and persecuted.
On a snowy evening, memories revive old WEI at the sight of the familiar scene at the backyard of a rich family. Sighing with deep feelings, he passes away all of a sudden.
Since he first played the role of WEI in 2012, YU has a deeper understanding of this character in every round of performances. He said: "I feel that the characteristics of the role have become part of me."
ZHANG, a first-class actor at the National Theatre of China that had won the “Plum Blossom Prize” twice, acted out the part of a fierce and ambitious man in a different style. DONG, an artist of the NCPA Drama Ensemble, played WANG Xingui, a greedy and disgusting man.
Every living character “stood” on stage, giving a performance along the entire storyline of love and enlightenment, touching the audiences in a thought-provoking way. The wonderful performance will last until June 23rd.
The writer XIAO Fuxing wrote, “Especially at the end, the actor WEI falls dead in heavy snowflakes and revives in the dark sky. With a folding fan in his hand, he starts dancing trippingly in red against the white snow. This scene touches the audiences.”
