Like a shabby picture scroll, the terminally ill Qing government broke through the heavy mist of history and appeared on the stage.

Actor HONG Tao, who played Emperor Daoguang, was the first to come on the stage. Emperor Daoguang was high-spirited in his early days and terrified after losing the Opium War. HONG Tao acted out this role in detail, making the character’s psychological change a symbolic token of the widely admired empire falling into decay.

Actor PU Cunxin played the national hero LIN Zexu. In the drama, he is a trustworthy official loyal to the emperor, and for his wife, he is an affectionate but incompetent husband because he devoted himself to the country.

Actress XU Fan played LIN Zexu’s wife ZHENG Shuqing. Her partnership with PU Cunxin on the stage was the big attraction in the premiere. When LIN Zexu was disgraced and had to part with his wife, XU Fan clearly rendered ZHENG Shuqing’s grievances in her words and eyes. At the same time, she sang Melody of Konghou, a Yuefu song of the Han Dynasty, expressing a woman’s worry about her husband in her voice.

Actor GUO Da played LIN Zexu’s teacher WANG Ding. As a native of Shaanxi Province, GUO Da rendered WANG Ding, a native of Shaanxi Province, too, to the life in his idiomatic native dialect. In the end, this loyal man chose to kill himself tragically in order to awaken the Qing government. His performance brought the drama to a climax.

Actor GUAN Dongtian played QI Shan, an important figure used by the Qing government to oppress LIN Zexu. This actor on the traditional opera stage vividly played QI Shan, a controversial character.

Together with the members of the NCPA Drama Ensemble and the artists of the Guangzhou Dramatic Arts Centre that played other important roles and acted as figurants, the five leading performers canonized the drama LIN Zexu with the spirit of Hero LIN and the original aspiration of art, making this great national hero a shining star on the stage and inscribing him in the audience’s heart.
