Drama Mr. MA and Son will be staged at NCPA in April

On April 7^th-9^th, 2017, drama Mr. MA and Son, adapted on the basis of the Chinese writer Laoshe’s novel with the same title and produced by Beijing Artists Management Corp., Ltd (BAMC), will be staged at NCPA Theatre.

Laoshe’s novel Mr. MA and Son tells the stories of a Chinese father Mr. MA and his son’s life experience when staying in London in 1926, and potrays their love stories with Mrs. Wedderburn and her daughter Mary respectively. Adapted and directed by FANG Xu, Mr. MA and Son marks the fourthwork by Laoshe, following The Life of Mine, Cat Country and Lao LI's Fantasy of Love (the name of the novel is Divorce). For this drama, Laoshe’s offspring SHU Yi and SHU Ji are invited as literary consultants, while Chinese famous actress Siqin Gaowa is invited to serve as artistic consultant. FANG Xu once commented on Laoshe’s works,“Laoshe’s all literary creations imply his wish to remodel the nation and the country through education. Mr. MA and Son actually probes into national issues”.

Headed by FANG Xu, drama Mr. MA and Son will be presented by an all-male crew, including two female roles: Mrs. Wedderburn and Miss Mary. FANG Xu will play the role of Mr. MA, while LIU Xinran, a young actor crowned as “the Best Actor playing the Woman Characters” as praised by media, will play the role of Mrs. Wedderburn. When it comes to overall presentation, FANG Xu comically recreates original work into “a game” in dramatic and humorous manner. He explained, “This adult comics comedy has strong sense of form. Through combination of two-dimensional comics and performance, all stories take place in an English newspaper with all sorts of wonderful changes, and the whole drama is a great game”.

In addition, the props, stage art and modeling are in line with the styles of the 1920s, while the overall presentation lays emphasis on connotation rather than realism. For example, except hats, umbrellas and other required props, the drama has no many props. Independent costume designer SU Guangyu is invited to design both British- and Bejing-style costumes for this drama.. At the same time, three musicians will join in the performance of Mr. MA and Son and bring unique live soundtrack.
