Since the opening of NCPA in 2007, Lang Lang has served as an “envoy to promote NCPA Classical Music Channel” and the NCPA 2017/18 Artist-in-Residence, and performed in cooperation with the celebrated conductor Seiji Ozawa and NCPA Orchestra, etc. Over the past decade, he presented wonderful performances at NCPA almost every year. The master class is also an important part of his NCPA’s Artist-in-Residence Programme.
Lang Lang was teaching ZHAO Zitong
The master class began with an in-depth dialogue between Lang Lang and the famous Chinese hostess MEI Qing. Lang Lang shared his stories with NCPA, his piano study experience and his insights on piano performance and the universal arts education. Then, four piano learners from different schools – JIN Yuchen, ZHAO Zitong, LAN Fangkuai and LIU Hao – performed ZHANG Chao’s Mountain Child, the first movement of Beethoven’s sonata Moonlight and La campanella and Liebestraum by Liszt in turn. After each performance, Lang Lang made comments and gave guidance to each child.
Lang Lang gave individual advice to each child after their performance
Among the four players, the 16-year-old LIU Hao, though blind, left a deep impression for his love of music and talent. Lang Lang spoke highly of his performance, saying, “His fingertips are very sensitive, producing delicate music. He is able to find time in space and good at grasping the artistic conception behind the notes.” He also gave advice to all the children, “You should not only master the playing skills but also pay attention to the unique feelings you experience in music. Piano performance is not a purely technical job but also a way to express feelings.”
Over the years, Lang Lang has devoted himself to the public-interest undertaking of music education. He founded the piano school—Lang Lang Music World in 2012.
The past decade has witnessed NCPA’s efforts in public education on arts. As part of the public education on arts, Classic Arts Lecture has presented some 3,000 high-level art activities, benefiting about 600,000 people. On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, NCPA specially invites more artists and art troupes to popularise art education and lecture on the beauty of art.
