La Sonnambula is to be staged at the NCPA

NCPA production of Bellini’s La Sonnambula will be staged from August 28^th to September 2ⁿ^d. On August 9^t^h, a press conference was held and attended by NCPA Vice President ZHAO Tiechun, stage director of the opera Gilbert Deflo and lead singer Dilbèr to introduce the drama’s highlights.

In 2014, the NCPA made a debut of its first production of Bellini’s opera - Norma, which caused a great sensation. This year, the opera rhythm of Bellini will be echoed again with the upcoming La Sonnambula and the NCPA will maintain quality production and bring classic artistic delights to the audience.

La Sonnambula tells a misunderstanding caused by a woman’s sleepwalking at a Swiss town. It’s a romantic work with the flavour of melancholy and audiences are carried away by the mild and plaintive rhythms. The challenging arias “Ah, non credea mirarti” and “Ah! Non giunge uman pensiero” present high requirement to the timbre of the singer. Meanwhile, the hero Elvino’s aria “Ah! Perché non posso odiarti, infedel, com’io vorrei!” is equally difficult for the tenor.

This time, again, the NCPA invited the world-renowned director Gilbert Deflo and his creative team—set designer Alessandro Camera and costume designer Carla Ricotti to present a romantic dreamlike stage to the audience with purified tonality and vaulted canopy. La Sonnambula is the third cooperation between Deflo and the NCPA after Nabucco and Der Rosenkavalier.

At the press conference, the cast the opera made their appearance. The role “Amina” will be played by soprano Dilbèr and Rosa Feola. Dilbèr has played numerous classic opera roles in her more than 30 years of career and this is the first time that she has played La Sonnambula. Italian singer Rosa Feola has played her role in NCPA production Le Nozze di Figaro and Don Pasquale, and she will bring artistic delight by her elegant singing voice. The role of Elvino is played by tenors Antonino Siragusa and Anton Rositskiy.
