Set design of the NCPA opera Don Giovanni
Don Giovanni’s story with women is a classic theme that has been interpreted repeatedly in the history of world literature and art. The opera unfolds with Don Giovanni cheating and abducting women, who was then dragged to hell on the last day of his life, profoundly revealing a conflict between human desires and social morality.
Set design of the NCPA opera Don Giovanni
Mozart created this opera based on the Italian
opera buffa and added some tragic elements into its music, expanding the expressiveness of the Italian opera buffa. Gounod once said Mozart's
Don Giovanni is a "flawless work.” Not only did the opera receive high praise from Goethe and Tchaikovsky, but it had a strong influence on literary creation by Bernard Shaw and more.
Yannis Kokkos, diretor, set and costume designer of Don Giovanni
Music Director of NCPA LÜ Jia will bring out the best in the music of this opera with Chinese and foreign singers, China NCPA Chorus and Orchestra. In 2017,
Lucia di Lammermoor, a co-production of the NCPA and the Mariinsky Theatre directed by Yannis Kokkos, won wide acclaim. This time, the NCPA has invited Yannis Kokkos again to serve as director, set designer and costume designer of
Don Giovanni. In his view,
Don Giovanni was an “avant-garde” when it had just come out, so he restage the “avant-garde” in the NCPA production.
Baritones Vittorio Prato and ZHANG Yang will share the title role.
Don Giovanni will be played by Italian singer Vittorio Prato, who is talented at classical operas, and NCPA resident singer ZHANG Yang. They will show the audience the unique charm of Mozart's classic in collaboration with other singers from at home and abroad, including Carlo Lepore, LI Ao, Francesca Dotto, XU Xiaoying, Davinia Rodriguez, DONG Fang, Juan Francisco Gatell, Francesco Marsiglia, Marina Monzó, XU Xiaoyi, Thomas Tazl, MEI Jie, Bjorni Thor Kristinsson and ZHAO Ming.
