As China’s first non-profit think tank that specialises in theatre management, China Theatre Development Research Centre, co-founded by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the NCPA and Shanghai Theatre Academy, which are from Beijing and Shanghai respectively, focuses on research, training and communication regarding theatres and performing arts groups, in order to promote the high-quality development of Chinese theatres and performing arts groups.

Adhering to the idea of “small organisation but big platform,” the Centre has formed a research team and CHEN Ping, the first President of NCPA, serves as the Director. The operational team consists of an expert consultation committee, theoretical research room and an application research room. The expert consultation committee is composed of interdisciplinary experts.

The goal of the Centre for the next three to five years is to develop it into a global leading and domestic top think tank that specialises in the theatre and performing arts, a base for training of high-level managerial talents for the theatre and performing arts, and a high-end exchange platform for domestic and foreign theatres and performing arts groups.

The forum gathers over 50 attendees from Chinese theatre circles and professional institutions.

According to WANG Ning, Deputy Mayor of Beijing, Party Secretary of the CPC NCPA Committee and President of the NCPA, the China Theatre Development Research Centre specialises in the theatre and art troupes, and this is of great significance for the promotion of the NCPA’s operations mode, while strengthening the building of Beijing as a national cultural centre. Next, the NCPA will continue to enjoy close cooperation with Shanghai Theatre Academy and give full play to its superiority in the platform, business, resources and personnel to provide the Research Centre with sufficient service guarantees.

CHEN Ping, the first President of the NCPA, delivered a presentation on the Centre’s target, research orientation, organizational structure, personnel composition and operation mode. He said, the founding of the China Theatre Development Research Centre is an inevitable outcome of the new era to promote the booming development of the art cause, and a task of top priority to make a breakthrough in the development of the theatre. The Centre received attention and support from the leaders of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Beijing Municipal Party Committee and Government.

CHEN Ping also said that the Centre would adhere to the development idea of “innovation, openness and sharing”, be concerned closely with XI Jinping’s overall planning for the new era, the NCPA’s demand for cultural reform and development and the major challenges existing in theatrical circles, and work with industry experts to achieve more valuable and practicable research results, so as to better serve government decision-making, theatre development and discipline construction.

Afterwards, the first China Theatre Development Forum was held. Directed by XI Jinping’s thought on the socialism with Chinese characteristics for the new era, under the theme of “New Era, Chinese Theatre and New Accomplishments,” the leaders and experts present at the forum jointly came up with new ideas and measures for the development of Chinese theatre in the new era around three subjects: “theatre and art troupes”, “theatre and stage” and “popular character.”

Finally, CHEN Ping summarized the three subjects, “The Centre will be concerned closely with the national need for cultural reform and development to continue to deepen the reform of the theatre and art troupes, build a performing arts industry chain with the stage at the core, and insist on theatre construction with people at the centre, in a bid to bring out more research achievements to promote the thriving development of Chinese art.”
