The China NCPA Orchestra gave performances at the Seoul Arts Center in 2011 and 2013 under the leadership of conductor LI Xincao and its Music Director LÜ Jia. This time, as the only Asian orchestra invited to the Festival, the China NCPA Orchestra dazzled the music lovers again at the cultural and art centre of South Korea.

The concert kicked off with Julian Yu’s Chinese Version of Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra as its Korean premiere by ZHANG Yi and China NCPA Orchestra. Unlike Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, which is familiar to music lovers, the Chinese version is based on the Chinese folk song Jasmine Flower. For every single instrument, folk musical elements in Girls Picking Tea and Chasing Butterflies and Fengyang Flower Drum are added to show a strong flavour of China. The Chinese cellist WANG Jian joined the orchestra to perform Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme. In the second half, under the leadership of ZHANG Yi, the orchestra reflected Mahler’s philosophy of life with colourful colours and different gradations.

Besides the concert, the NCPA also held talks with the Seoul Arts Center on future cooperation, with a view to deepen cultural exchanges between both sides.
