The production of
Les Pêcheurs de Perles tells another success story on friendly cooperation between the NCPA and top international art institutions. When it came to the significance of this co-production, ZHAO Tiechun commented: “Staatsoper Berlin is one of the top-notch opera houses in the world, and produces many operas with great popularity and high reputation. For the first time, the NCPA and Staatsoper Berlin work together and exert united efforts. This not only witnesses benchmarking of the NCPA towards the world-class art institution, but also will be useful to broaden the international horizon of opera aesthetics for Chinese audiences”.

The opera is directed by world-renowned German director Wim Wenders through crossover practice. Although director Wenders has not arrived in Beijing yet, he extended warm greetings at the press conference through a video, and expressed fervent expectations for the upcoming trip to Beijing: “I can’t wait to be in Beijing, to see the big stage of the NCPA, and get to know the Chinese cast. I just be there and get to work on this music I love so much.”
In this co-production, the China NCPA Orchestra and China NCPA Chorus will perform under the baton of highly-respected Italian conductor Donato Renzetti. Maestro Renzetti was Principal Conductor of Orchestra della Toscana. He often appears at internationally-renowned opera houses and music festivals, such as Teatro alla Scala and Glyndebourne Festival. His conducting style carries on distinct Italian genre tradition and radiates full of romanticism.

Renzetti arrived at the NCPA a week ago and joined intense rehearsals. On May 5th, he also briefly explained Les Pêcheurs de Perles through a video: “The love story in this opera quite differs from that in Carmen. Carmen reveals love in the more merciless manner, but Les Pêcheurs de Perlesis brimming with romantic love. Bizet, an outstanding talent in music creation, shows the impressionist style in this work, and draws on some tints of Debussy and Ravel’s works."
Most of the international cast have participated in the premiere in Berlin in 2017. Russian soprano Olga Peretyatko is a contemporary female heavyweight presenting operas by Rossini, and frequently shines on stage of the Metropolitan Opera and Wiener Staatsoper many times. This is also the first time that she dedicates herself to an opera production by the NCPA.
In addition, Francesco Demuro, Stefan Cifolelli, Alfredo Daza, ZHOU Zhengzhong, Paul Gay, GUAN Zhijing and other outstanding Chinese and foreign singers have also joined in on intense rehearsals. They shared their insights at the press conference, and wished to deliver a wonderful performance so that audiences would be deeply impressed by the charming Les Pêcheurs de Perles.
