NCPA new production of Puccini's opera La Fanciulla del West will have its premiere from August 20th to 25th. The rising American opera director Thaddeus Strassberger will reveal the real charms of West America on the stage under the baton of Andrea Battistoni, the youngest conductor to appear at the Teatro alla Scala. Many singers known in the world's music scene for singing Puccini’s operas will work together to act out this love story.
In the early 20th century, lots of artists drew inspiration for creation from "wild" West America, where there were both barbarism and civilization. Seven years after the birth of the first "Western film" on screen, the Metropolitan Opera saw the premiere of the opera La Fanciulla del West in 1910, the first opera themed by "wild West". The opera La Fanciulla del West is set in the California of the "Gold Rush" era.
Puccini, who had great interest in "exoticism", integrated the Indian music and American ballads into this Italian opera. In this opera are various elements peculiar to "Western American films", such as burglary, robbery, manhunt, poised, fiery women and combative men. In terms of music, there are popular classic arias in the opera, such as "Ch'ella mi creda", and the opera is also the composer’s only work to be filled with the most changeful music.
NCPA new production La Fanciulla del West is in conjunction with artists from Italy and America. Andrea Batistoni, who conducts this opera, is the best of Italy's new-generation conductors. This talented conductor started cooperation with the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Mariinsky Theatre when he was just 19 years old, and mounted the Teatro alla Scala at 24. Thaddeus Strassberger, the director and set designer of this opera, is famous for his "novel and thoughtful" style. He succeeded twice in directing La Fanciulla del West in Montreal, Canada and Austria respectively. This time, Thaddeus Strassberger will dig deep into the characters' emotional world and depict the landscape of the "Golden West" from a novel, shocking stage vision.
Since the opera La Fanciulla del West has very high requirements for singing, the NCPA has selected world-class singers, such as Amarilli Nizza, Marco Berti and Claudio Sgura, for the leading roles in the opera. Not only are these three Italian singers good at performing in Puccini's operas, but they have given a perfect performance in other versions of La Fanciulla del West.
