On December 4th, Anne-Sophie Mutter, NCPA Artist-in-Residence of the 2019-2020 season, appeared in the Concert Hall and played Beethoven’s three violin sonatas with the pianist Lambert Orkis, kicking off the NCPA Beethoven Week and putting an end to the “NCPA Pure Classical” 2019.

Mutter’s first cooperation with Lambert Orkis dates to back more than 20 years ago. Last century, they released an album of Beethoven’s violin sonatas, which was regarded as canons by music lovers. Moreover, they jointly revised the music scores of the works.

As the first presto theme of Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No. 4 kicked in, Mutter and Orkis took the audience back to the Classical Era in their musical dialogue. Then, the sounds of Violin Sonata No. 5 “Spring”, one of Beethoven’s works most familiar to people, flowed out of Mutter’s bowstring. The last piece performed at the concert was Violin Sonata No. 9 “Kreutzer”, which contains Beethoven’s signature profundity and philosophy. This sonata has extremely high requirements on a player’s music sense and understanding of harmony, but for Mutter and Orkis, who have explored the music piece for decades, it is very easy to render.
The above three wonderful violin sonatas by Beethoven were just appetizers on the feast of music. Three concerts of Beethoven’s different genres of music will be held during the Beethoven Week.
