On the evening of September 12th, 2020, the opera La bohème, a part of the NCPA “Bright Autumn Cadenza” Online Series, resounded at the Concert Hall. Under the baton of LÜ Jia, NCPA Artistic Director of the music, NCPA Resident Opera Singers, China NCPA Orchestra and Chorus presented this classic. As of press time, the live broadcast of this concert received more than 25 million hits on NCPA Classical Music Channel and many online platforms.

La bohème tells the story of a group of wandering artists in Quartier Latin of Paris in the 19th Century, which revolves around emotional entanglements between two couples of lovers. Through simple and effective drama arrangements, supplemented by costumes, props, lighting and other choreographic means, a brand-new performance space took shape on stage of the Concert Hall, breaking through the limits of the traditional opera scene.

ZHOU Xiaolin and WANG Chong respectively played the roles of the embroiderer Mimi and impoverished poet Rudolph. They lived up to expectations and sang Si, Mi chiamano Mimi and Che gelida manina in a mellow and charming manner. ZHANG Yang and ZHANG Wenqin respectively portrayed the roles of painter Marcello and Musetta, both quarrelsome lovers. Soprano aria Quando men vo sparkled the great charms of Musetta. GUAN Zhijing and WANG Hexiang respectively acted the roles of Colline, a philosopher and Schaunard, a musician. When Colline sells the old coat he has worn for many years to help Mimi see a doctor, he sings a heartwarming aria Vecchia zimarra, senti. In addition, ZHANG Yang played the role of Alcindoro, Musetta’s bosom boyfriend.

In the pre-talk prior to the live broadcast, the conductor LÜ Jia and director SHEN Liang explained the music, plots and characters of this opera for the audiences. ZHOU Xiaolin and WANG Chong also expounded on hardships and challenges confronting the opera singers. Piano art director YU Haiyang, concert broadcasting instructor TIAN Chen and curator DU Wenjie appeared from behind the scenes and told stories about their connections with art.
