On the evening of April 30th, the 2nd run of NCPA drama Crossroads was staged with the original cast from the NCPA Drama Ensemble at the NCPA Multi-functional Theatre, touching audiences with their exquisite performances.
The creative team, composed of director HUANG Ying, playwright XU Weixin, set designer ZHANG Kunpeng, lighting designer HAN Dong, costume designer NING Fangguo and make-up designer LIN Ying, pay tribute to the classic film of the same name directed by SHEN Xiling with this drama.
The actors recreated the life in Shanghai with their impassioned interpretations, while footage from the old film brought back those classic characters. The dialogue between two generations of young people demonstrated the timelessness of the classics.
The four unemployed young people, portrayed by DONG Wenliang, LI Xichang, FENG Yang and YU Mengchao, are living in a bustling city but can not fit in. They are plagued by issues such as unemployment, rent and prospects, for which they make different choices.
XU Zixuan, LIU Beibei and WANG Wenjie, who acted as Miss Yang, elder sister YAO and the landlady, delicately portrayed the women of different temperaments in the Republic of China. The characters’ plight and happiness are also familiar to the youths of today, sparking resonance for the audience.
In this drama, old footage and on-site filming are very important elements apart from performances of the actors. The love story of Mr. ZHAO and Miss YANG is captured in close-up through filming. By projecting old footage, the interaction between the original film and the actors’ live performances is created.
At the end, the actors stepped out of their roles to tell stories about predecessors in the film industry, such as SHEN Xiling, ZHAO Dan, BAI Yang, LYU Ban, YING Yin and SHA Meng, whose choices and perseverance mirrored the ending of the film.
