Musical Singin' in the Rain has its stunning debut at the Beijing Performing Arts Centre

On February 14th, 2025, the West End Theatre musical Singin' in the Rain had its China dabut at the Beijing Performing Arts Centre.

Based on a classic MGM film of the same title premiered in 1952, the musical Singin' in the Rain features the same cast and creative team as its West End counterpart, which has been highly popular since its premiere in 2012. The Beijing Performing Arts Centre is the only stop on this musical's China Tour.

The story is set in the Hollywood of the 1920s, when the silent film had its heyday. Don Lockwood is a superstar in the silent film era. Everything is to change with the rise of talkies. Don meets Kathy Selden, a talented young chorus girl, who steals his heart and furthermore, her appearance makes a difference to the future of Hollywood.

The musical brings to life the transition from silent films to talkies, with the complexity and beauty of human nature revealed, too.

As the curtain was raised, the audience felt as if they were travelling back to the Hollywood of the 1920s. The stage was dressed like a dreamy space with the gorgeous lights and costumes adding radiance and beauty to each other.

Don Lockwood, played by Grant Amiral (right) was confident, humorous and sincere. Cathy Selden was as optimistic as what she looks in the clear voice of Emily Langham (middle). Cosmo Brown, portrayed by Stephen Anelli (left), was witty and humorous, his presence making the entire musical much more joyous and relaxing.

When Singin' in the Rain was sung, six tons of water poured down through high-tech sprinklers, forming a unique, thrilling rain curtain on the stage. Grant Amiral sang joyfully under an umbrella in the rain, echoing the famed scene in the film.

The performance climaxed with the chorus scene - water splashing, the audience sang with the rhythm of the music.

The musical Singin' in the Rain will be staged for 16 sessions till February 27th at the Beijing Performing Arts Centre in Tongzhou District in Beijing.
