From November 26th to 27th, NCPA will hold a pageant of many ballet superstars from all over the world. The “Ballet Gala” will let audiences indulge in the kaleidoscopic ballet of classical, neoclassical, modern and other styles. Just set out on a journey of rolling wonders here!
First of all, what impresses us most is classical ballet’s gorgeous romanticism and breathtaking stunts. On this occasion, many pieces of classical ballet will be put on show.
In this ballet gala, gauzy white dresses move up and down as ballerinas dance elegantly. So, viewers can savour awesome passages of La Sylphide and Giselle, both of which are vintage romantic ballet. In particular, La Sylphide has been engraved in history as the first show of dancing en pointe. This time the masterpiece will entail Megan Fairchild and Gonzalo Garcia, who are both principal dancers at New York City Ballet. And Giselle will star TAN Yuanyuan, widely acclaimed Chinese dancer and Friedmann Vogel, Germany’s superstar, as the protagonists.

Eye-opening stunts are no doubt the greatest highlight of ballet performance. This gala will witness many stunts-oriented plays. Adiarys Almeida, Boston Ballet’s “vibrant” ballerina famous for her “endless spins”, will join hands with Jeffrey Cirio, American Ballet Theatre’s chief dancer, in “Black Swan Duet” of Swan Lake and “Wedding Duet” of Don Quixote, both of which boast about dense artful movements. No dancer not good enough dare put himself or herself at such risk. So, they obviously have full confidence in themselves. Moreover, Semion Chudin and Evgeniya Obraztsova, both hottest stars of the Russian State Academical Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow, will bring us duet of The Nutcracker. At the same time, Maria Shirinkina and Vladimir Shklyarov, transferred from Mariinsky Theater to the Staatsballett Berlin not long ago, will perform duet of the pristine Russian ballet Le Corsaire steeped in masculinity.

And The Talisman, too, will be played on this occasion. This masterpiece, though choreographed by Marius Petipa the creator of Snow Lake and Sleeping Beauty, has been seldom seen on the stage. The Staatsballett Berlin will send here Allman Gregorian and Maria Kina to make alive the rare work imbued with Indian atmosphere.
Neoclassical ballet, a hybrid of “old” and “new”, creates a fresh aura well beyond stereotypedness. And this gala will even impress audiences with two new trends—symphonic ballet and dramatic ballet.
First, “symphonic ballet” demonstrates a perfect mix of music and dance by discarding plot and characters in the classical genre. Here a name has to be mentioned—choreographing maestro George Balanchine who created his magnum opus Jewels, a panoply of sheer flamboyance, as inspired by his passing by the window of Van Cleef & Arpels store at Fifth Avenue, New York. Finally, he orchestrated a piece of gorgeous ballet incorporating emerald, ruby and diamond relative to French, American and Russian genres. A single ballet event at best can hardly perform well the great work. Instead, this hilarious gala will offer a chance for American cuteness, Russian magnificence and French romanticism to come together. Only then can Jewels unfold all its charms.
Maria Shirinkina and Vladimir Shklyarov will perform “Balcony Duet” from Lavrovski’s
Romeo and Juliet.
Second, “dramatic ballet” enables such old art to speak a tale vividly and show subtler emotional conflicts. Maria Shirinkina and Vladimir Shklyarov will perform “Balcony Duet” from Lavrovski’s Romeo and Juliet. TAN Yuanyuan and Friedemann Vogel will bring to life the duet from Onegin, the last play of John Cranko’s trilogy. Also, the audience will have the honour of appreciating American choreographer Val Caniparoli’s The Lady of the Camellias. This artist’s works are seldom seen in China.
Lucia Lacarra and Marlon Dino, Ballett Dortmund’s principal dancers, will perform here Russell’s Spiral Twist.
As is known to all, cutting-edge trends are part of ballet history. Now this gala’s contemporary works will show something trendy here as an eye-opener.
British choreographer Russell Maliphant, the hottest artist in this regard, feels particularly obsessed with such “movement’. To this end, he has buried himself in areas like anatomy, physiology, anthropometry. This time Lucia Lacarra and Marlon Dino, Ballett Dortmund’s principal dancers, will perform here Russell’s Spiral Twist, which may give full scope to the possibility of endless rhythmic movements. This couple will also perform Light Rain, a work demanding enormous flexibility. Ballerina should, as expected, dance softly like a falling leaf in the drizzle. Lucia really is the best actress for this artwork.
Yuri Simirkanov, Mariinsky Theater’s choreographer and actor, will show off his work Parting, which may create a unique effect with a chair and his vigour. Another two dancers from the Staatsballett Berlin will, accompanied by African music, bring a passage from maestro Nacho Duato’s Rassemblement, in which primitive movements showcase mankind’s eternal pursuit of freedom.
