Act I
Angelina lives a bitter life with the bondage and abuse of Magnifico, her stepfather, and his two daughters who are stingy and selfish. One day they drive a beggar away rudely, but kind-hearted Angelina calls the poor man back and gives him some drinks and food. In fact, the beggar named Alidoro, who is actually the tutor of Prince Ramiro, is on the tour of finding a suitable bride for the prince.
The Royal Family announces to hold a grand ball soon and invites all young ladies of the noble family, hoping the prince would seek out his soul mate. The two elder sisters hurry to dress up at the news. The stepfather, waking up from sweet dreams, takes it as a lucky omen and imagines that better days would come and his declined family would be revived if one of his daughters is chosen.
Prince Ramiro, disguised as his own valet, bumps into Angelina who captures his heart. The prince's valet Dandini, disguised as the prince, arrives to invite the Magnifico's to the ball. The whole family is flattered at the invitation, however, Magnifico refuses Angelina to accompany them rudely. Alodoro, who has prepared dress for Angelina, arrives in time and lets her attend the ball in the splendid dress.
In the palace, Ramiro and Dandini stick to their tricks. Dandini says: 'I can only marry one of you, and which one is willing to marry my valet[.]' Ramiro also pretends to propose to them but is refused gruffly. Although he is tender and loving, they would never marry a common fellow. A whoop-up comes. Alidoro announces the arrival of an unknown veiled lady. Her beauty and elegance wins her many conquests. Ramiro senses something familiar about her. Magnifico feels that he is in a dream but on the verge of being awakened with a shock. Act I ends in suspense.
Act II
Magnifico and his two daughters have a hunch that something is to pay and fear that they would be punished for their meanness to Angelina if she were chosen. However, Magnifico still dreams about becoming a member of the royal family and being flattered by people after one of his daughters has married the prince. In another room, Angelina turns 'the Prince' Dandini down politely, and tells him that she is in love with 'his valet' Ramiro, and leaves quickly, giving Ramiro one of a pair of matching bracelets. Meanwhile, Dandini confesses to Magnifico that he is really Prince Ramiro's valet. Magnifico returns home in a vile mode with his daughters, only to see Angelina, still in rags, tending the fire. A thunderstorm rages, as he fancies the unknown lady in the ball resembling Angelina. Ramiro suddenly appears at the door, the Magnifico's are surprised and have fantasies about Ramiro's arriving. Unexpectedly, Ramiro recognizes Angelina by her bracelet and runs directly to the shy girl. As Angelina leaves with her prince, Alidoro suggests the Magnifico's pleading for mercy that they would certainly get from Angelina. The opera ends in Angelina's aria full of mercy to her stepfather and sisters.
