This 'romantic opera' strengthens ties between drama and music, enhancing and intensifying the character of 'Music Drama' of Wagner's operas. Lohengrin is full of epic feeling, stimulates solemn and respectful feeling, especially during the chorus. The most popular and recognizable part of the opera is the Bridal Chorus 'Here Comes the Bride' in Act III, which is slow and sweet, serious and sensitive. Until now, couples still choose it at their weddings.
The year 2013 will be noted by the 200th birthday of an opera master, Wagner, which is being celebrated all around the world since 2010. There are, altogether, 22 theaters producing their new versions of Lohengrin. NCPA will also be a part and revive this renowned opera to pay honor to Wagner. The grand present of the year marks the second collaboration between NCPA and internationally distinguished director Giancarlo Del Monaco. Lohengrin will be supported by NCPA Chorus and NCPA Orchestra with Lu Jia as the chief conductor who has conducted NCPAss Der Fliegende Holl?nder. NCPA will collaborate with the stage design team led by Giancarlo to make brilliant scenery. Enthusiasts in China will have chances to hear top singers of Wagner's operas: soprano Pertra Maria Schnitzer, tenor Stefan Vinke and baritone Steven Humes, Eva Johansson, Zhang Yalin, Wang Wei, Guan Zhijing etc.
As an important part of the world's series of commemoration of Wagner in 2013, this production will be the nice one to show the capacity of NCPA. Wagner lovers in Beijing will have chances in NCPA to admire the musical charm of the great master of opera.
Director's Notes
This is a solemn and forceful tale, set in a dark past when religious superstition and personal ambition made it impossible for people to believe in love in this world! It is interesting to know that in the time of Wagner, this tragic theme also inspired Verdi to write Aida and Un ballo in maschera, despite that such a theme is depressing. In the finale of Wagner's Lohengrin, however, this great German composer gives us a chance of redemption.
I am very pleased to see that NCPA is rapidly becoming an important art organization in China and in the world. It excites me much more that my Lohengrin will be the third opera I have produced for NCPA after Puccini's Tosca and Wagner's Der Fliegende Hollander.
By Giancarlo Del Monaco
Finally Lohengrin reveals his name, that he is Parsifal's son, and that he comes from Montsalvat, where he is one of the knights who guard the Holy Grail. Lohengrin restores the swan to human form: it's Gottfried, Elsa's long-lost brother, previously transformed by Ortrud's evil magic. But all does not end well — a dove draws Lohengrin away in the boat as Elsa collapses.
