Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra is developed from the former Zhejiang Folk Song and Dance Ensemble Orchestra (later renamed the Zhejiang Song and Dance Symphony Orchestra) founded in 1958. Through the unremitting efforts of several generations of musicians, it has now evolved from a 30-member small troupe to one with over 60 members. The troupe has successfully collaborated with top Chinese conductors including Tang Muhai, Chen Xieyang, Zheng Xiaoying, Zhang Guoyong, Yu Feng, Huang Yijun, Huang Xiaotong, Fan Chengwu, Shui Lan, Lin Yousheng, as well as prestigious conductors from Japan, the United States, Canada, Italy, Australia and other countries. It has also collaborated with Lang Lang, Kong Xiangdong, Qian Zhou, Qin Liwei, Xue Wei and other performers.
On top of performing classic symphonies, the orchestra has, in recent years, drawn inspiration from folk music and produced a series of symphonies with strong regional characteristics including Primitive Hunting, Spring Dream in a Chamber, and Flying Partridge, all of which are warmly welcomed and applauded by audiences. The orchestra also went on music tours to South Korea, France, Switzerland and Germany. And the concerts were hailed by oversea audiences as the most beautiful and fascinating with the strongest oriental flavor.
The orchestra now has 105 formal members engaged in symphony production, performance and education. As a symbol of culture in Zhejiang Province, the orchestra not only accurately conveys the essence of western symphony classics, but is committed to the localization of symphony, in an attempt to give the troupe a distinctive regional touch through production and fusion of Chinese music and Zhejiang local music.
